JB--I think you should reexamine Lorna's voice. As Rathnaait says (and in matters of the Garland girls, her instincts are spot-on), Lorna has an excellent instrument. For various reasons, her stage persona has lacked the warmth and vulberability of her mother and sister, but lately she has been growing by leaps and bounds through her touring of the "Songs My Mother Taught Me" show.
The show features Lorna singing her mother's legendary Nelson Riddle and Mort Lindsay arrangements, belting as good as a Patti, an Idina or a Julia Murney. She's not just good at the barnstormers like "Rockabye Your Baby," "Chicago" and "San Francisco," she's also wonderful on the quiet songs like "What'll I Do?" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love." Her rewritten version of "Born in a Trunk" is enormous fun--she sings through her mother's entire career as a way of reo****ing to her two teenage children "How Grandma Got to Carnegie Hall."
If you get a chance to listen to the new Lorna Luft, I think you might be surprised to find that you no longer think she's a "un-talented woman riding on the coat-tails of her mother and sister," which was always way too harsh a judgment for a singer Judy said "has more talent than all of us put together."

Posted: 12/2/04 at 4:31pmI have loved Judy Garland since I was a little girl and I saw her in The Wizard of Oz. She taught me how to dream. My other favorite Garland movies are: The HArvey Girls, Easter Parade and Meet Me In St Louis. When she sings Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas............I cry.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 7:17pmI'm currently in a production of Wizard of Oz, I have to say our little Amy is absolutely amazing, and SO like Judy Garland! It's quite odd really! But she's so great in her own way too, bless her. :)

Posted: 12/2/04 at 7:18pmI like Judy in her younger days (BABES IN ARMS is still one of my favorite movies). I liked Liza in CABARET and that is pretty much it. Don't like Barbara at all. Bleh!

Well you all are doing a crappy job of it!! Step it up! Take care of the poor woman already!

Posted: 12/3/04 at 2:50pmTalent is worthy of respect, applause and accolades, but the Judy-worshipping is not just about her talent. It goes beyond that into the reverence of her tragic self-demise and trickles down to Liza, who is worshipped in the same way. I've known way too many gay men who were absolutely fanatical and rabid about both women as well as Marilyn Monroe. I've never understood it.

The quality that Judy, Liza and Marilyn all share in common is a palpable vulnerability. Like facing life was a major challenge, but, dammit, they were gonna do it anyway...and they were gonna SING!
That's the quality I (and MANY of my gay friends and non-gay friends) connect with.
And as for the whole 'I don't like the gay divas and I'm proud of it' thing, I'm perplexed. What exactly is there to be proud of? It's personal taste...it just is. I understand gay pride, ya know, making it through though the world tells you you're disgusting and wrong. But I don't think I'll ever get 'not-typically-gay pride'.
You don't like the divas. Whoop-de-do. Let's throw a parade.

I'm not saying it because I'm "proud" of not liking them. I never said I didn't like them, I just never understood why there was such a big obsession and worship thing that is so unique to the gay community. You explained your thoughts and it helped me to understand it from your perspective.
As for the gay pride thing....well....the parade has morphed into something other than being gay or pride, but we've had this discussion more than once.
If so many people can openly gush about loving the divas, why can't I discuss why I don't get it? Hardly seems fair...
