STORY TIME.
whee.
So last night after I saw Chitty, I went to the Lennon stage door because I wanted Julia to sign my HAIR CD insert; it was pretty quiet at the stage door last night, but even though I had my Lennon playbill still on me, I didn't bug the rest of the cast, since they took off pretty quickly.
Julia came out and signed a few things, then came over to my friends and I - I asked her to sign it, and just like you said, Starbuck, she launched right into conversation like she was talking with old friends. She's the best. She was like "oh, HAIR! This was fun! Who else signed - oh! RAUL! I knew him before he was (mimed marquis) RRRRRRaul Esparza!"
We all asked for pictures, to which she happily obliged - she had on her Lennon messenger back and was like "hold on, let me get rid of some of these bags." She talked about the gifts Yoko gave them, and how Yoko must have a room full of iPods or something.
I won't bore y'all (all like... two of you who are sharing the love?) but it was just really great of her to be so candid. We talked about the show - the critics, the Wall Street Journal... the plague of the jukebox musical, and how the others suffer... and the fact that once people get over themselves and actually SEE Lennon, they do like it. We talked a bit about other theatre, too, but mostly about Lennon, and how it's such a tiny show that'll have trouble holding its own with flying cars, green girls and killer rabbits. I already posted what she had to say about the recording, but also - that she wants it to happen for the sake of the people in the cast who've never had the experience of making an orignal cast album. That was sweet.
What absolutely broke my heart and made me want to go see that show every single day was when someone asked her if they were going to be at Broadway on Broadway, and Julia said she would hope so, as long as they're even still open. She was like "guys, please tell your friends - come see it again - get people to come!" begging to help get the show some support. I just totally melted right there, and decided I'm definitely going to be in that audience sometime next week.
So, yay. She's so much fun! I'm not sure why I didn't really expect her to be a total sweetheart, but - she's amazing.
A work of art is an invitation to love.
