(AP) -- "Karmic Medium" Rea Mertzola blames the obessive hysteria of dozens of fans of the musical "Wicked" for the accident that felled Tony-winning actress Idina Menzel on Jan. 8. Mertzola, who claims to have a special psychic ability allowing her to read "karma wheels spinning around the lives of celebrities" called a press conference to assure Menzel, her husband Taye Diggs and others, that Menzel "did absolutely nothing to bring this terrible development onto herself."
Menzel was nearly finished with a Saturday matinee performance of Wicked when a trap door accident forced the curtain to ring down on her tenure in the title role and to miss her last scheduled performance on January 9.
"The fault," according to Mertzola, "is the countless juvenile people, and I don't JUST mean chronologically juvenile although they are certainly legion, who became SO obsessed with this musical -- a simple musical with a nice story and some pretty songs -- that they practically willed the accident to happen with their hysteria.
"Let me put it this way," Mertzola explained, "these people who saw that show over and over again and kept diaries of every performance they saw and entered ticket lotteries and cried when they didn't get Idina's autograph and scrambled for tickets to Idina's last show and were gauged heavily by 'ticketing agencies' did this to Menzel. They put out so much worry and fear into the universe -- "can I see from this seat?", "will Idina be on vacation when I go?", "what are my chances of winning the lottery?", "if I don't see Idina's last show I shall DIE!" that THEIR collective negative karmic build-up GUARANTEED that they would never, ever get to see -- or hear about and be jealous over not seeing -- Idina's last show."
Mertzola concluded the press conference by singing a line from Wicked to "the idiots who did this to Idina" in a lovely soprano voice:
"I hope you're happy. I hope you're happy now."
