Not since Anita Bryant has Florida had a more idiotic bigot in the political arena. But her personality--and her prominently displayed breasts--are so larger-than-life she's quickly becoming a figure of camp.

"If you are not electing Christians, tried and true, under public scrutiny and pressure, if you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," she told interviewers, citing abortion and gay marriage as two examples of that sin.

"Whenever we legislate sin," she said, "and we say abortion is permissible and we say gay unions are permissible, then average citizens who are not Christians, because they don't know better, we are leading them astray and it's wrong..."

While I agree that she is an idiot, I think your thread title is a wee bit misleading.

Because Muslims, Agnostics, Atheists, and non-practicing Christians would also "Legislate Sin."

jimnysf: According to a St. Pete Times poll for a couple of weeks ago, incumbent senator Bill Nelson (D) leads Harris by a 60-25 margin, with 15 percent undecided. It's time to dust off the old quote from former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards: the only way Nelson could lose this election is to be caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy. (Or if Harris loses the primary and Nelson faces someone without her negative baggage.)

eyeluvbrdwy: It's only irony (or its weak cousin, Alanis-irony) if you think that those who support a political party have to march in lockstep with all of the party's pronouncements. Then again, those who don't march in lockstep seem to be having a rough time these days (see Lieberman, Joe).

Update! Harris "clarified" her remarks on Saturday:

"Harris' campaign released a statement Saturday saying she had been 'speaking to a Christian audience, addressing a common misperception that people of faith should not be actively involved in government.'"

Oh, so she was speaking to a Christian audience. So the problem isn't her remarks; the problem is those pesky non-Christians who were listening to remarks not intended for them.

Glad we got that cleared up.

Don't you know that "God" speaks directly to her and to George Bush. They hear voices telling them what to do. Any other time, people hearing voices would be put away, but if the so-called voices are from "God", then it's OK. Pretty funny when you stop and think about it.

I heard God whispering in my ear once. At least I think it was God - there was hardly any light and my back was to him, so I can't really be sure. I asked the attendant who came by to pick up my sheets if it was God, but he didn't speak English, so I couldn't understand his answer.

No matter how many times I've gone back to the baths, hoping that God would whisper in my ear again, all I've ever found are the grunts of normal men.

But I vow to keep trying.
