"Despite the lowest ratings in 20 years at The CBS Evening News, anchor Katie Couric says she doesn't have second thoughts about becoming the nation's first female solo anchor. She says the last-place newscast is improving and, as viewers get used to her, they'll tune in more.

"I had my eyes wide open going in," Couric told USA TODAY Wednesday. "I knew this was going to be a big challenge. To get out of your comfort zone is not always comfortable."

Eight months after she replaced interim anchor Bob Schieffer — and days before CBS unveils its fall schedule to advertisers — Couric and Evening News are slipping deeper into third place. But she says she's determined to make it work."

I think Couric as talent as a "Personality" but she is ill-suited to the evening news. She did a great job on the Today show, which was primarily an entertainment show. To watch her deliver "news" stories is awkward indeed.

She shines as a talk-show host.

She reads the "news." She is "talent" not a journalist.

The 6 o'clock news is dead. The collective jump for war with Iraq has destroyed all credibility in the media. It's pretty bad that everyone took cues from Fox.


When was the last time any news anchor did real reporting? They READ IT. Anderson Cooper is the only one actually on the ground, but his bias in reporting during the recent invasion of Lebanon has ruined his credibility.

Mejust, good suggestion. Are you just speculating or do you actually see this happening? Granted, I'm not sure what kind of contract she has with CBS, but she can always be bought out.

It's speculation, it seems like a good switch for her. Rosie has kind of raised the bar for that position. Before Rosie it would have been a step down for Katie. Now it's a step up.

The inherent problem if she moved to the View would be the return to the mundane. The show would return back to the same touchy feely meaningless format it started with. They can bring back the soft Vaseline filter and those corny segments. How much cancer can they talk about? Wait and see….


****I don’t think anchoring the nightly news means anything. A woman doing it is just as meaningless. Perhaps Katie could have started doing legit news instead of reading government press releases. She had a chance and blew it.
