Just found out Warner Archives released this on 04/12/11. Is it worth a purchase?

Posted: 4/28/11 at 9:56amIt's great fun. I recently saw this at a Lincoln Center screening with Ken Russell and Tommy Tune in attendance. During the Q&A, Russell prompted Tommy Tune to try his dance steps from the film - what a treat!

^ But is the film "fun" or just the experience of seeing it with the Q&A you attended?
I'm curious about it, too. I've never seen it. There is an extended clip from it on the Warner Archvies page where it says, "CLICK HERE" to preview the film's quality. I enjoyed the clip a lot, but it sounds like it goes back and forth between surreal production numbers and more "realistic" book scenes. Is that true? (Sounds a bit like "Pennies From Heaven.")
I didn't realize that Christopher Gable had the male lead. He's in the film version of 1776 (not a big part, I think he is one of the Carolina delegates with no lines). He's also featured nicely in "The Slipper and the Rose" (one of my guilty pleasure film musicals that I adore). He started out as a ballet dancer before an injury pushed him into less physical acting roles. And he died fairly young from cancer.
I enjoyed his talent.

Love SLIPPER AND THE ROSE. I still have the soundtrack to that film but I haven't seen the film in a very, very long time.
I'm kind of on the fence about THE BOYFRIEND. I've read it's not a direct translation of the Sandy Wilson original. It takes more of a show within a movie approach as the leading lady of an upcoming production of "The Boyfriend" (Glenda Jackson) sprains her ankle and a company employee (Twiggy) is selected to replace her at the last minute as they rush to get the show back on track.
Wish they had it available for digital download.

Posted: 4/28/11 at 12:20pmThe movie bears little resemblance to the stage production of the BOYFRIEND. If you've not seen a production, you'll not get much of an idea of what the stage musical is about. However, it's fun and campy and very Ken Russell, so if you're a fan...or curious about Russell's style of film making...it's probably worth adding to your collection.

I may just give this one a chance. I'm curious to see how Russell pulled this one off. From stills I have seen some of the musical numbers look very Busby Berkely-esque.
Ken Russell is a director that has always intrigued me. WOMEN IN LOVE has always been a favorite, TOMMY as well. That he followed up his jarring and very disturbing THE DEVILS with this film peaks my curiosity. The man is anything but predictable in his choice of material.

Christopher Gable achieved a lot of success as artistic director of Northern Ballet Theatre before his premature death, giving it a national profile in the UK. His risk taking and thinking outside of the ballet box drew new audiences (me included) to the company's productions.
