Caroline Kennedy has withdrawn from consideration for the vacant Senate seat in New York, according to a person told of her decision
On Wednesday she called Gov. David A. Paterson, who will choose a successor to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Her concerns about Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s deteriorating health (he was hospitalized after suffering a seizure during President Obama’s inaugural lunch on Tuesday ) prompted her decision to withdraw, this person said. Coping with her uncle’s condition was her most important priority, a situation not conducive to starting a high profile public job.
Mr. Paterson had indicated to her that the job was hers if she would accept it, the person said.
She was planning to issue a statement on Wednesday evening.

As a New Yorker, I am disappointed.
I think she would have been a dedicated and talented Senator for the State of New York.
But, I understand her need to put family first. And applaud her for making that difficult decision.
I agree 100%. I think she would have been great, but totally understand her decision
And addy, who is that in your avi? It's driving me nuts trying to figure it out.
(It's Kelli O'Hara! Mom-to-be and star of SOUTH PACIFIC! I adore her!)
Like you, Addy, I'm disappointed but I do understand her reasoning.
Perhaps, though, she'll run in two years? She'd have my vote in a heartbeat.
Oh! That's a hopeful thought, D2!
She would have my vote, as well. In a New York Minute!
Not sure what she would bring to the job having really no political experience other then the name. There was something very Sara Palinish about her consideration and I felt it was sort of a blatant double standard.
Don't get me wrong, I like her, I admire her very much but she has very little hands on politicking other then by blood relations.
I have great admiration for her, but this sadly wasn't meant to be. Some candidacies capture the Zeitgeist; other don't. Hers didn't.
But, snafu, she is infinitely smarter and more insightful than Sarah Palin. Maybe someday you will read her books or investigate her public works and understand that.
But for now, she made the right decision.

Caroline has the poise and grace of her mother and the intellect of her father, she would have been a great Senator!
According to Keith Olberman, that report may not be accurate.
sayanora, y'know.
Well, since there is only 1 black senator- Burris- maybe the gov could choose a black female to take Hillary's place. Any suggestions?
Pal Joey, I have no doubt what so ever she is smarter and is more insightful then Sara Palin. That goes without saying. I am not comparing their intelligence because doing so would be equal to comparing apples to recently flung monkey feces.
Perhaps she would make an incredible Senator, it is her general lack of on hands experience that concerns me. I would much rather she decided that politics were for her and run a campaign then be appointed.
What was refreshing and appealing to me was that she WASN'T a practiced politician.
She is an accomplished attorney with Executive skills, a facilitator and someone with grace and brains. She works tirelessly on behalf of the causes that are important to her, and has absolute integrity.
I would be thrilled to take the politics out of Government work!

Citizen/legislator was part of the plan!
(I suddenly have Dan Fogelberg in my head:)

IF she wanted to be senator, she should have married a president like everybody else does.
I've read speculation that Paterson is getting ready to appoint someone else, and notified CK to give her an opportunity to withdraw before his announcement.
I read that, too. Speculation on the radio this morning was that it's going to be Andrew Cuomo.
i hear he's going with someone who sounds less like a valley girl. i for one think that new york should have a senator who sounds like she has a grasp on what she's talking about, y'know. because how a person sounds in an interview is exactly who that person is. always. no exceptions. none.
