Kerry vs Terrorism

Kerry who is lambasting GWB re intelligence failure ( a/k/a/bad intelligence) previously wanted to disband the CIA & or cut its funding

On the campaign trail, he said we have overblown the fear of terrorism. Do not think the widows & family of the 9/11 victims feel it is overblown. After saying the fear of terrorism was overblown, he wants a tax to pay for homeland security. Huh

Terrorism fears are overblown. Boy am I glad to hear that. If not for him saying that, I would have been worried re the transatlantic flights being cancelled due to bioterrorism fears. I guess people have a short memeory. The only way we will take it seriously is when we get hit again. Next time it may be many more than 3,000 people.

If any Dem gets in, it will only be a matter of time before we do get hit . You can take that to the bank as they are all on record as wanting to gut the Patriot Act & none take terrorists threats seriously.

re: Kerry vs Terrorism

Roxy, come on. It doesn't really matter who it is you're trashing so long as it's the person who appears, at this early stage, to be at the head of the Democratic pack, right?

Remember, when Bush the First, former head of the CIA, fomented the cozy relationship that Sadaam HAD with the US? Talk about having no long term memory.

If W is fixated on still being President, he may want to actually engage and answer some of the charges that he just gets huffy over people even bringing up in the first place.

Roxy, do I need to remind you that you once suggested a new tax on every weekly paycheck of $5/per to fund what you thought were Bush's inadequate responses to terrorism?

I have to say I agree with Kerry. Going after Sadaam, and spending all that money on it, did absolutely nothing to make the US or the widows and survivors of 9/11 you invoked any safer.

re: re: Kerry vs Terrorism

Ahh...it's good to see things have not changed much. Again Mr. Roxy is using the memory of 3000 dead people to support the Bush administrations policy. Don't bother supporting your arguement with facts. And again you don't provide any sources for the statements you attribute to Mr Kerry. I remember once you told me that Michael Moore said the terrorists of 9/11 were heroes, which is of course, ridiculous.
As for the Patriot Act...of course you use the same arguement you always use, if it's discarded we'll be hit again, if a democrat gets in office, we'll be hit again, yadda yadda yadda. Don't bother to mention any facts to support your arguement. The fact is, it has been shown that there was enough info in place to prevent 9/11 but there was a failure (and I'm not just blaming the Bush administration for that). So why do we need The Patriot Act if we had enough intellegence to stop 9/11 without it?

re: re: re: Kerry vs Terrorism

Well I didn't see the Republicans doing much to stop 9/11 Roxy. Bush is an idiot and I think we'll all be glad to see him go this Nov.

re: re: re: re: Kerry vs Terrorism

I thought this thread was about Kerry Butler.

I do think it is no accident that there are new "terror alerts" right after the Bush Administration gets so very bad news regarding the reasons for invading Iraq.

re: re: re: re: re: Kerry vs Terrorism

I guess we simply have to get the **** kicked out of us again & again. We have a very short memory

Did not see Mr Clinton doing diddly squat to stop terrorism especially after the WTC was hit the first time. The only way we will see if I am right re us getting hit again if a Democrat takes over will be to wait & see. Clinton was in office 8 years & gutted our intelligence capabilities. Bush was in office about 8 months before 9/11. So far 2/3 of Al Queda is dead or behind bars. To me that is a hell of a better record than Mr Clinton compiled. Clinton did nothing after the 1 st WTC attack . He did nothing after a plot to bomb LAX was foiled. He did nothing after a plot was uncovered to simultaneouly blow up half a dozen airplanes over the pacific.

We shall see. I will leave it at that

re: re: re: re: re: re: Kerry vs Terrorism

Actually, Clinton launched a missile attack against Osama Bin Laden (an actual terrorist mastermind who actually DID have something to do with 9/11) and the Rush Limbaug's of the world claimed it was to distract the country from Monicagate.

Faulty memory works both ways, Rox.

A missle attack against an aspirin factory ?

I am surprised everyone is fixated on Bin Laden. He is a figurehead who is rolled out ( assuming he is still alive ) when the troops need to be exhorted. He is not the mastermind. Al Zawhiri is the real power. If Bin Laden were to get it, someone else would immediately take over . His death would be a rallying cry for Jihad

If I had a choice between 2/3 of their leadership decimated & Bin Laden gone, I would take the former. If ALGORE had been President, we would be much worse off & we would have already been hit again as Al Queda would be virtually intact & we never would have had the measures put in place so far.

Then it's a good thing the election was stolen from Al! Phew! That was CLOSE! Incidentally, super-pragmatist and Middle East expert Tom Friedman believes the exact opposite of you on that front.

The Patriot Act is extremely Orwellian--it needs to go.

Bush and his administration is doing what conservatives LOVE to do: use FEAR to scare Americans into getting everything they want. It was this way with the Cold War and communism. It's this way now.

We can sit here all day and debate all of this, but I know that in time, the record will be set straight--and it won't shine favorably on Bush.

And, if a terrorist attack happens anytime soon, it will be regardless of who is President.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: kerry vs terrorism

jrb, it's not conservatives alone who use fear. if you go back and look at campaign commercials over the last several cycles you'll see that the democrats use fear just as effectively. just fear of a diferent kind. you yourself are using it in your post with the reference to an orwellian present due to the patriot act. please, how many commercials have i seen where older americans are used to promote the argument that republicans will kick them out on the street eat their children and pluck the fillings out of their heads and go cackling away to count their spoils. how many ads over the years have used coded language and a fear of racism to portray republicans as insensitive boors one step removed from the klan? it's all a matter of perspective.

now as to your cold war fears, i think the master of the cold war fear ad was a democrat. you somehow forgot the lbj ad insinuating that barry goldwater would blow up the world? or was that not an ad that played on fear. both sides have used and continue to use fear in campaigning because it's still the quickest and most effective motivating factor in human interaction. they use different kinds, but they both try to get at that self preservation instinct inherent in all of us.

as far as the patriot act, i support it and gave my reasoning in depth in another thread and doubt i could again match that eloquence, but short version, it allows the feds to use the same weapons against terrorists that they've been allowed to use against mobsters. and it's effective. have you read it or are you just going by what you've heard?

and uniq, that's a really immature attitude. i half expected you to finish that statement with neener neener neener, but that would have connotated an iota of wit.

Oh, papa, I think the Dems can take a few lessons from the Repubs as how to instill fear to achieve their goals.

re: re: re: kerry vs terrorism

oh, master, i think the dems are pretty good at fear. it's just a choice of what you fear you want to prey on. the republicans prey on more universal fears: homeland security, gay rights (i know this paints me badly but as much as people don't want to admit it, the majority of this country is still as gene wilder described in blazing saddles, "simple farmers. these are people of the land. the common clay of the new west. you know . . . morons.") and governmental control of everyday life (ironic, huh?). the democrats play to more specialized fears: eliminating affirmative action, guns being handed out in the streets, medicare being eliminated, entitlements being cut and the spectre of big brother.

it's all a matter of perspective. it's not preying on fear when your side does it? please. they all do it, it's just a matter of what fear you prey on.

re: re: re: re: kerry vs terrorism

I'm not saying that Dems don't do it. They aren't as effective, because they usually overplay their hand and come off as shrill and hysterical. The Repubs are FAR more subtle. re: re: re: re: kerry vs terrorism

re: re: re: re: re: re: kerry vs terrorism

Reading all this sounds like a bunch of conspiracy theories to me. We have a terror alert on every American national holiday, yet Sep 11th was not an American national holiday. Naturally, after our largest attack on the nation since Pearl Harbor, I think the country is going to be a little jumpy. I don't think it is about either political party trying to "control" us with fear. If so, they certainly have succeeded with many of you. The paranoia is practically palpable.

I'm working on my alliteration.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: kerry vs terrorism

Not a replicant, but someone who decides not to live life in fear any more. Absolutely every move any administration makes is immediately spun into some sort of ulterior motive conspiracy reglardless of party affiliation. Pretty soon, I'm sure we'll find evidence that the Civil War was really a battle for control of oil reserves, Lincoln's death involved a second shooter, and the American Revolution was simply Washington's agenda for world domination.
