King Kong (1976) question#1

Did I miss something, but why is Jessica Lange's character named "Dwan" (just "Dwan" no last name) and what does Dwan mean anyway?

Considering her performance, it must mean stupid, no-talent idiot.

She explains it. Her name was actually Dawn, but she reversed the middle two letters to make it memorable.

God help me for remembering that.

I love the '76 version. It's nutty.

I remember first seeing it and thinking, "That girl has NO future in this business. She can't act her way out of a paper bag!"

...and she couldn't, in that movie.

But what a future!

Love how she starts talking to the ape about his astrological sign. What were the writers thinking?

King Kong and Lange's performance is one I always bring up when someone is apt to start criticizing a newcomers performance. It's a perfect example that just because you didn't hit a home run your first time up at the plate there is always a chance to redeem yourself and Ms. Lange redeemed herself TENFOLD. She had the last laugh.

To be fair, she had the last nearly-inaudible laugh.

While touching her face seven times a frame.

I swear to God, she takes hand-acting to a new level with every new role.

Her Big Edie may as well be called Big Marlee Matlin.

I thought the same thing about Charlize Theron after seeing Cider House Rules...beautiful, but no talent.

I stand corrected.

I thought the same thing when Hillary Swank abused her parents in that lifetime movie.

I just remeber thinking, "That a boob!"

First time I ever saw one on screen... That I remember.

I was debating going with Phyllis Frelich...but since Marlee has an Oscar(tm)...

And my first boobies on screen were the pair in AIRPLANE.

I vividly remeber the moment...

I had heard about it from kids at school, that her boob fell out, and when my father said it was okay to see the movie, I turned my my brother and made three noises...

Shhhhht (The tearing of the dress)

Toing (The boob coming out)

Aaaahhhh!!! (What I thought my reaction would be)

I just recently watched it on DVD and had to freeze frame it to see anything. Funny what you remember from being a kid.

"I swear to God, she takes hand-acting to a new level with every new role."

She studied acting in Paris with the same teacher that taught Marcel Marceau. That's where all the jazz hands acting comes from.

I got 2 nights extra work on this film. We pretty much knew it was going to stink, when we saw that mechanical Kong and how it "moved". For all the time they took with it, you barely get a glimps of it in the finished film. Mostly, it's just a man in a monkey suit.

You think the hand acting is bad, you should see what she learned in Paris about boob acting.
