Well, here's a scene of Marlon in TEAHOUSE. He's like a calmer young Mr. Yunioshi.

I'm not too sure what the original film is. That was clearly Al Jolson.
But the clip was part of a pretty bad movie called IT CAME FROM HOLLYWOOD. It was compilation of the scenes from some of Hollywood's worst movies.
The hosts were Gilda Radner, Dan Akroyd, Cheech and Chong and John Candy.
You can see the whole thing on youtube.

What do you guys think of gender-bender roles? A man playing a woman, and vice-versa? Like Linda Hunt in THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY. Do you think it should've gone to an actual male dwarf, since there are so few roles for little people, anyway?

Men should get to play female roles more often.
I will not die happy until I am allowed to play either Mame (in the musical) or The Witch in Into the Woods.

Interesting question. I've never seen the film so I don't know the role.
Perhaps.
Or were you just picking an extremely singular example to mock the larger issue?

I think there was a reason for it being a woman. Could be wrong though.
Didn't she win an OScar for that?

It was a serious question. Hunt's Billy is clearly a male dwarf (an not a woman pretending to be a man, à la VICTOR/VICTORIA or BOYS DON'T CRY) who's fathered several kids.

Then I would like to hear what actors who are little people might have to say on the issue.
I wouldn't be surprised if some of them thought the role should go to one of their own.
I never thought of the Latino casting issue until Latino actors pointed it out and I found myself agreeing with them.

Having seen Ms. Hunt in DOUBT, I think the role of the older nun should have been played by a male dwarf.

She did that at Pasadena Playhouse right? I take it she didn't impress you.

Honestly, BFB, it was the STRANGEST 'star turn' I've ever seen! She delivered 75% of her lines facing straight to the audience - full front, no matter who was onstage with her. It TRULY came across like someone had pissed her off, and this was the way she had decided to get back at them.
The end result was that we HATED the play - and went round and ROUND with Jerby about how the play itself just wasn't that great.
I still think that, by the way

Ahh.. I ask because I almost saw that production. I remember everyone buzzing about how great the play was (something I actually agree with) but when I asked how Hunt was, I'd get.. "ah..she is okay." And the conversation would stop.
I think I'm glad I waited to see with Jones.

I don't know ANYONE who liked what we got with Hunt. No one.
But you KNOW what the reaction was to Cherry! If you don't, just check with Jerby

I still kick myself for not seeing Doubt back in 2005. My theatre professors both saw it, and one thought he did it, the other didn't.

Completely off-topic but: If blackface is offensive to blacks, then why isn't drag offensive to women?
#46
Posted: 6/27/08 at 9:48am
because drag performers aren't mocking women. many would agree drag performers are paying tribute to their favorite divas or are living out a fantasy through costume and performance. performers in black face are mocking an entire race.
