The "Into the Blue" thread sent me down the well-worn path of the Kylie rabbit-hole, and I've spent a snow-bound day with Ms. Minogue.
For me, the highlight of the Kylie tour is 'All the Lovers', from 'Aphrodite'. Bombastic electro-pop? Maybe. For me, it is an indelible memory of a moment in my life: Still on the parTy (the chemicals hadn't turned on me yet), and the anthemic chorus, the invitation to the dance, the joyous embrace of the polyamorous life all combined to give this song a place in my heart that it may hold forever.
And the video? Joseph Kahn's incredible, multi-ethnic, pan-sexual, flash-mob, orgiastically worshiping Kylie as they lift her ever closer to heaven still fills my heart with joy and lifts me higher, higher.
Official Video
Love the song. Love the video. One of my favorites, for sure. Seeing it live, I came close to euphoria, even without the drugs(!).
Seeing her live was the best night of my life and I will never forget it. My favorite number from the last concert was "Cupid Boy", if only for the OUTFIT. I want that dress.
I'm not apologizing for the size of this photo.

Loving Kylie in Ostrich feathers means never having to say you're sorry!
Ha. This thread.
I live and work in downtown LA and so walk by all of the locations in the "All the Lovers" video everyday. I stumble upon shoots in downtown (which often substitutes for Manhattan in many films and tv shows) every week, but unfortunately, never saw the Kylie shoot!
Addison - did you see Kylie on tour in the US or in Europe? "All the Lovers" was great in the US tour, but the staging wasn't quite as magical as the waterworks of the European tour. Still, the amount of spectacle she is able to pack into the smaller venues in the US is impressive. And, yet, as diminutive as she is, she never seems to get overwhelmed by the spectacle. I guess that's called stage presence and star quality.
As central to my Pop Cannon as the video is, I know little/nothing about its production. I should look for a 'making of' vid.
Was some of it actually filmed on location? I guess I just extrapolated from the fact that the pyramid was--I assumed--a CGI confection that the whole shoot was a green-screen/CGI event.
I saw Aphrodite Live at the Hammerstein--definitely a red-letter evening. Yes, the smaller-scale venue diminishes the sense of "spectacle", but the intimacy of the experience was fantastic.
It was all shot on location--a friend of mine was an extra in it (and got to hold Kylie's hand.)
Fair warning--this will only make you love her (and the video) more...
The Making of....
I don't know if it's careful image control on her part or not, but in every interview and behind-the-scenes thing she seems like she would be a joy to work with. I feel like the hair stylist could have gone a bit easy on the curlers and blow dryer, though. That big hair looks a little crazy on her.
Eric - can you recognize your friend in the video? What a fun credit. Was there an audition? Ha.
Oh yeah, he's very clear for much of it. Handsome, latino guy. I'm not sure if there was a casting call--he now does a ton of extra work for tv/movies but has an agent, however back then he was just getting interested in it, and I don't think had an agent yet. I'll ask him the next time we chat.
I simply have never ever heard any bad words spoken about working with Kylie--from her Neighbours soap opera days to now. Even in her "bad girl" era of the mid 90s where she was known for doing E and having sex with that guy from INXS in an airplane or whatever, the news is still always about how charming and polite she is (something some detractors seem to think means she's cold and fake -- like they've never heard of someone being professional before.)
What a great experience to have had. Next time you speak with him, tell him I'm a fan of his work!
Her manner seems so consistently authentic and appealing. And, as Eric says--in all the years of hearing random bits and pieces of gossip from chorus boys, caterers, managers' assistants, etc. etc. etc., I've never heard an unkind word about KM. If it's all an act, it's a pretty serious, full-time act.
In the 'making of' video, I love how distracted she is by the footage of the 2 women making out--"The kids look good!". LOL...
