Now, why the hell was this movie never on DVD? Someone release Frank Perry's best film!

One of the strangest teen movies ever.
LAST SUMMER

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

A few years back for a lit into film course I had to write about Frank and Eleanor Perry's adaptation of The Swimmer. Anyway, Last Summer kept coming up, and I tracked down a (poor) copy, but I believe all original sources of the film (35mm) have been lost, so that may be a reason... And yeah strange, kinda disturbing film but worth watching.

I caught some of this film on cable a few years back, it pops up every now and then.

I have it on dvd although it is a quasi-bootleg. I did a Google search for "Last Summer" dvd and up it came.

Not a happy film, but that young Richard Thomas with a nice case of Ballet Backside is kind of easy on the eyes.

I saw the uncut original X-Rated version a few years back. The ending was like getting punched in the gut. It was disturbing and so, so sad. It left me feeling very much the same way "They Shoot Horses Don't They" and "Looking For Mr. Goodbar" did. It's incredibly well acted by Barbara Hershey and then-newcomers Bruce Davison, Richard Thomas and Academy Award nominee Cathy Burns. Hard to believe that this was directed by the same man who went on to direct "Mommie Dearest".

Barbara Hershey notoriously changed her name to Barbara Seagull after making this. She felt responsible for the death of the seagull that was featured in the film and stated she felt it's spirit enter her so in tribute to the deceased bird she changed her stage name. Weird.

Here's the ad from the film's NYC premiere at CINEMA I. Notice the 'X' rating.
