"I also thought it was as if we were seeing things through Sarah's eyes...she wondered if Jean suspected something."

that's what I thought. I also think the ending, and its lack of something "big" happening reflects the feeling readers get when they finish the book.

The book sounds fabulous so I'm gonna have to get my hands on it. I get now what you mean about Jean, I guess when you feel you've done something wrong you think everything people do is because they caught you. Like I said since I was so involved in these characters' lives, I wasn't really being objective or analytical, I was too immersed in their story. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

As much as we wanted them too, the ending is perfect with them not ending up together.

Though I didn't love the whole MADAME BOVARY aspect. You know from that moment on what's going to happen.

I half-agree with you, it did foreshadow the ending in a bit too obvious way but I liked the way it gave Sarah a way to battle that other lady and it put her choices in a feminist context. Also, the fact that she didn't kill herself at the end like Madame Bovary does in the book, sort of provided a sense of hope in the film since Sarah decided to keep on living and find a way to live. The book club scene also gave Kate Winslet one of her best scenes in the film, IMO.

She was just so great in that movie, particularly in that scene.

Finally saw it this afternoon - thanks to Netflix.

What a film! I'm at a loss for words. Scary and brilliant - terrific acting, writing, and filmmaking. American Beauty of 2006. The narration was a little jarring at first, especially considering the robotic nature - then I realized it was the guy from NOVA...and realized that it was stylized to be like a PBC documentary.

Vastly underrated - though a very tough sell.

My one problem - I couldn't see a damn thing! I had to turn up the TV's brightness to see what was actually going on.

I saw it last night, thanks to Netflix. It, indeed, is an excellent movie with outstanding acting. Interestingly, I found the book club scene to be Winslet's weakest. I found something something dishonest in her performance there.

well to me, that scene in the book was sort of Sarah justifying her affair to herself by giving that little speech at the book club - and there was something incredibly dishonest about the whole affair thing to begin with. So I thought Kate Winslet acted it well, if that makes any sense
