Don't say I didn't warn ya - you didn't watch yet, don't read this.
Once again, the show made me jump up and say "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT???" at the top of my lungs. Symbols, symbols -- looked a hell of a lot like hieroglyphs, did they not? Locke not reporting out on that was pretty interesting -- almost as interesting as his mad scramble to get the numbers in. His entire faith is locked (pun intended) in that button -- I wonder how this will affect him?
What the heck was with Sawyer and Hurley and the weird frog? What was the point of that? Filler?
That picture the soldier had of the girl -- was she someone we know? She didn't look familiar, but it's not like the show to have a picture like that and not have it have some significance...
Oh, and Henry Gale who was in a balloon? Two references DIRECTLY to the Wizard of Oz -- no way is that a coincidence. The guy's an other.
But looks like we have ANOTHER repeat next week. This is getting ridiculous.
oh, that guy is TOTALLY an Other. Did you see him after Sayid kicked the **** out of him? He had this LOOK on his face...if someone shot me with an arrow and then tortured me? I'd be crying, shaking, ANYTHING. He was just LYING there after Jack dragged Sayid out. TOTAL Other.
GOOD EPISODE. Sayid remains my very favorite character.
And yes, I was crying foul he second that he said he was HENRY GALE and he had crashed IN A HOT AIR BALLOON. Psshhh. Sayid's right--he's totally one of the Others.
I really loved Sayid's flashbacks this episode. I was so angry at the end when the American commander said goodbye to him in Arabic.
I was also wondering what was up with the Hurley and Sawyer frog hunt. Just more to make us dislike Sawyer?
OK.....first...the symbols...not only did we get them, but all of a sudden they're black and red. That was freaky......since we've never seen any flashes of red and black when the numbers flip. Although I was glad we did get to see what happens when the numbers go to 0...I was afraid we'd get a "last second entry" and never really get there. Plus...did Locke really reset the clock by entering the numbers? It looked to me like he hit a different button....
The point of Sawyer, Hurley and the frog? I think it was to show how ruthless and unpredictable Sawyer can be. Just when you think you've figured him out, he does the opposite of what you think. (Personally, I thought he was going to adopt the frog as a pet)
And I totally caught the Wizard of Oz references too. (Although his wife's name wasn't Emma or Emily)
I do think the guy's an other...but I also liked Locke's observation that being an "other" is all a matter of perspective!
Absolutely excellent episode tonight!
I noticed that too Kook, it was nice of Sayid to remind us of all the stuff that happened last season with the Others.
Jason, I'm sure by tomorrow morning there will be hundreds of sites up analyzing the symbols. I'll defer until then.
The frog thing was a very strange side story. At first it was this kind of cute Sawyer and Hurley thing, but then when Sawyer killed the frog... We established last week that Sawyer is "not a good person," was the animal cruelty really necessary?
I did really like Hurley's little speech about being fat. I think some people really don't realize that fat people are quite self aware, however I did giggle at the "Babar" thing
The picture was of Kate, as the soldier looking at it was her Dad (or the guy she thought was her dad). Earlier this season we saw him during Kate's episode. She went to visit him at an army recruiting center if you remember. In that episode as well, Sayid was visible on a tv screen in the background at the center
Yes! I knew the girl in the picture was someone on the island...except her hair looked so blonde, I thought it was Claire...but then could not figure out why Claire, who's from Austrailia would have a father in the US Army!
Thanks Tag! I had forgotten that Kate's dad was a recruiter.
That makes sense - the picture just didn't look like Kate very much...
I said to my dad when we were watching the episode -- I'll bet his wife's name is Emily. Nice little pull the rug out from under us making it Jennifer. Oh well.
And I'm waiting for the symbol analysis.

Was that Kate's Dad? Huh. I didn't even realize that. He looked different than I remember!
I need to find a screencap online of the hieroglyphics, so I can figure out what they mean. Has anyone found one? Or I will have to watch the Tivo later to see what they were.
Last night's episode was great. It reminded me of the Season 1 episodes - very LOST-ish. I found some of the Season 2 episodes to drag out too much. This one was fantastic though.
I wonder if the Sawyer/Hurley thing is some sort of Butterfly Effect reference. Like, killing the frog for no reason will upset the "balance" of things on the island, etc...Just a thought.
The next new episode with Claire's kidnapping flashback looks gooooood!

Sledgeweb has a translation for the symbols up. They believe that it said "CAUSATIVE DIE, or roughly CAUSE TO DIE." There is also a link to a scan of the entry in a Middle Egyptian Dictionary.
I'm still not sure I really believe that anything will happen when the clock runs down, but the close call certainly did make me nervous.

i literally screamed "NO" very loudly when Locke hit enter and the numbers reset. UGH!
oh and one more thing - Ranch dressing. if the Dharma project was started in the 60s/70s there wouldnt be ranch dressing, it wasn't popular then nor had it been "stablized". although it was invented in 1954 it was until 1983 that it was bottled and became more popular than Italian.

Maybe they put the ranch dressing in there when Desmond and his buddy joined the project (the hatch was technically open then!) which I believe was in the early 2000s? It was after Jack's wife was in the hospital, because that's when Jack first met Desmond.
This show makes me nuts.

This show just gets better and better. I love it. And I knew that was Kate in that photo, though I didn't recognize her father. I love the backstories and the subtle (and not so subtle) imagery. Great show.
