I agree that crime is a serious subject. There are ways for people to protect themselves and there are very real nut cases in the world who would do innocent people harm. Fortunately, the crying baby tape serial killer is not one of them. See the urban legend debunking link below. And realize that the way the news media works, there would NEVER be a serial killer luring women out of their house with the sounds of crying babies without EVERY news outlet playing it up to keep people in a maximum state of terror. This is not the sort of news that you would be hearing first in an email from somebody whose friend this happened to.

The problem with these fantasy scenarios is that it tells us more about the people who dream them up (and pass them on in emails) and how they REALLY see the world than it does about ways in which people can protect themselves.

I myself took a model mugging course when my work involved me being in not terribly well lit places very late at night. Let me tell you, I learned some very valuable tips about deescalation and escape. These are techniques a person learns through practice and can not just be passed on via text.
