Oh goodness, the thought of a Kidz Bop'fied "Bad Romance" just came into my head.

True.
I actually heard that song last night, and I wasn't really impressed by it.

I'll feel bad if I turn this into another "just because he used Idol as his platform for exposure doesn't mean Adam isn't legit" thread haha
But just for the record, try kidz bopping something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajniExratoE
not as easy to do
And that's one he wrote quite a bit on
Okay okay, I'm really done with the Adam talk now, I SWEAR

It's not that I hate him. I just wasn't impressed with his new song. I don't mind his other stuff, though.

I would LOVE to see a Lady Gaga concert. I can only imagine what an awesome spectacle it would be. She is mega talented.
BTW, I just saw a commercial today for the new Kidz Bop album. They do a cover of "Paparazzi." You can hear a snippet in the commercial. Yikes.

Maybe I'd have to see Semi Precious Weapons live to really get it. Content wise, the kitsch level reads "novelty band". Musically I'd never think about them in the same thought as Adam Lambert at all. I'd be more likely to dismiss them as a ~glam rock~ version of Jet or something.
If there were anything beyond the sartorial comparisons? One of Adam's songs has the lyric "I was born with glitter on my face, my baby clothes made of leather and lace" and it makes me cringe. So far, every single Semi Precious Weapons song I've heard is made up of exactly the same kind of inanity.

^Oh yes, that line bothers me too haha.
I actually kind of reeally wish Master Plan had been a main track on the album because I feel it's kind of similar to Sure Fire Winners, except minus the super kitsch that makes Sure Fire Winners a bit hard to palate
To be honest, Semiprecious Weapons just sounds like a bunch of noise to me. I'm all for funky stuff, but they just do nothing for me at all. Part of it may be that I love Adam's voice, and I don't particularly like the SPW lead singer's voice

snl89, they're two completely different types of artists...which I'm sure was Namo's point.
I like Adam, his voice is different and his music has potential...but he shows more likeness to Pink than a glam-rock frontman. Nothing wrong with that, it's just that some people are gong to raise an eyebrow at how he's being marketed as edgier than he is...or more accurately, his music is. Give him and his label time to work him out.
Anyway, enough about Adam. It's all about Gaga.
I'm having to wait till she comes to the UK, but from what I've seen of the US Monster Ball it looks incredible. She's growing so quickly as a performer it's hard to keep up, the Fame Ball had a gritty self-made (which is fitting considering that's what Gaga is) feel...the grungey looking band, the glam costumes and more intimate venues...apart from when she played the huge festivals, of course. The Monster Ball is such another level, just goes to show what she and her Haus are capable of dreaming up when given a big budget to play with. Also worth pointing out this tour was thrown together at the last minute after Kanye bailed their 'Fame Kills' tour. Impressive.
She's completely dumping the current sets/costumes in favour of the rest of the tour (UK, World) which makes you wonder what the hell she came up with that could top it? Or further more, what they could come up with that was so undeniably great that her management etc. weren't concerned at the price tag of a new show and disposal of an already expensive one? Guess that's the perk of being a guaranteed sell-out artist who is only going to get bigger. I mean, she's not even released her second single from this album yet...'Telephone' will be HUGE.

Yeah, I read she was redesigning the show. She must be just sparking with creative ideas. And the Monster Ball show looks like it cost a pretty penny.
Oh, and Semi Precious Weapons are a rock band. That's why it sounds like a foreign language to so many of you.

Posted: 1/22/10 at 11:23amI have to admit, I wasn't impressed with Gaga in the beginning and didn't see anything that special at first, but she is starting to grow on me a bit. I'm curious enough to want to attend a concert of hers now, which I haven't been able to say about Madonna in almost twenty years. I'm not a "fan" yet, but I'm willing to open up to investigating a bit more about Gaga. I just wish her music had a more unique quality that would really grab me and hold on with something very distinctive, but I find I have to work a little harder to develop my interest in her. I am really starting to admire her as a person, though.

I listen to a lot of rock bands. But I can't hate on you for this, because I'm the first person to pull a "...you only listen to cast recordings huh?" on people around here.
Justin Tranter's face unsettles me. I keep trying to put my finger on it, like..."Is he a gussied up and bleached out Ben Affleck? An oblong glow in the dark skull? A 20 dollar bill with Andrew Jackson's portrait defaced with ink, glitter, and puff paints?"

It took me a while but I have fallen a bit in love with this woman. Mostly for her style, wit and intelligence but she also writes a great hook. I think "Bad Romance" is the best song and video of the year. Her perf. at the VMAs was so good I teared up when she left he piano...really amazing stuff.
That said, my first impression, from her appearance on Dancing with the Stars, was not very good. I thought she sounded mediocre and couldnt dance. She seemed to be looking at the dancers to keep her place. I'm not sure what that was about, but I havent been unimpressed since.

Posted: 1/22/10 at 12:19pmI don't mind putting in some effort if I find something to admire in the artist, either personally or professionally, and like I said, she is starting to grow on me. I'm curious about her and her success and it makes me want to invest in the research of her work. Sometimes music (or film or television) doesn't click with me at first, but I'm curious enough to revisit the material and for some reason, it'll work for me from a new approach. If an artist can inspire me enough to want to research and learn about them, then I'm all for giving them a real shot before writing them off. I think I'm intrigued more by her than her music, but I just get the feeling that she's on the precipice of something much bigger.

I went last night. Really, REALLY enjoyed myself. Lady Gaga is definitely one of a kind.
Semi-Precious Weapons were absolutely terrible, though. They just stood up there, screamed, and pranced around in heals. I felt bad for them. Truly the definition of a hot mess.

Here's my journey with GaGa:
Before owning The Fame, I thought she was just some random dance artist that a handful of club gays knew about and for some reason were obsessed with. "F--- Pink! It's all about GaGa!!"
Heard some songs, got The Fame for Christmas and thought she was a new Kylie or a really naughty new Britney. Fun. Fresh. Why not?
Saw her performances on awards shows and thought she was clearly becoming the new Madonna meets Leigh Bowery with a voice as good as Ms. Aguilera's (the total package)--and that was thrilling enough for me.
Her political stances, particularly her speech in Washington made me respect her greatly.
"Bad Romance" the song didn't impress me that much at first.
"Bad Romance" the video amazed me and made me appreciate the song--which I am now obsessed with, esp the remixes.
Fame Monster and her piano-only performances on shows showed a whole new layer of her musicality and has since made me see her as the second coming of Christ. I think she's absolutely brilliant. Her interviews only deepen that respect. The craft behind her music and designs is on a level we just haven't seen much of in the pop world lately.
So, it doesn't surprise me if some people who only have a periphery view of her don't understand the buzz/hype. If all you see is the spectacle the media pumps, you might miss the magic. And maybe that magic isn't your thing--that's cool, too.

jerby, I was going to mention the homage to Leigh Bowery too. I love that about her and I want those razor blade glasses!
She needs not be compared to anyone, because I think she is the real deal and will be around for a long time.

jrb, I kind of had the same experience with GaGa :)
At first I thought she was just another typical electro/dance pop artist with minimal talent. I think the first time I really saw her was on Idol last season, and I was kinda like "...okay that was.. weird". I was just very "meh" about her. Then I saw her VMA performance and thought it was kind of really creepy but kind of really cool too. I was intrigued. And then I heard Just Dance and Paparazzi more and more on the radio and realized she actually has a very beautiful voice, and the songs are quite a bit more musical than they first come across. I also respected that she actually sings live and sounds really good singing live.
I wasn't too fond of Bad Romance the song, but when the video came out THAT'S when I went "wow, she's brilliant. Like.. REALLY brilliant". And then I saw some videos from her pre-GaGa days at clubs and stuff, and that just made me appreciate her talent even more.
I'm still not totally crazy about ALL her music- at least not from The Fame- but The Fame Monster is seriously kick ass and incredible!
She's so fearless and is doing something few, if any, people have done before- and that is VERY rare these days. She deserves to be HUGE, and stay huge for a very long time :)

What I love about her is that she has so many dimensions, and you can take or leave each one of them...or take all of them and prepare for one hell of a ride.
Not a fan of her electro-dance-pop music? That's ok, because she has some fantastic reworked piano versions.
Freaked out by her weirdness? That's alright, because her music is kick ass.
Not a huge fan of her clean cut pop music? Well, you might like her rocked out live versions.
Into fashion/performance art? Well, go figure..she has that in buckets. Enjoy.
"Gaga was established before she was established—her ascent seemed like nothing short of a goddess assuming her rightful position"
I think that puts it perfectly. She was born to do this, a perfect pop artist with the whole package and more. Like she says 'I was always famous, it's just now people know about it'.

Posted: 1/22/10 at 1:50pmI just knew if people waited, it would happen. This is why I was always so flabbergasted when people (I'm not naming names, Parks) would actually argue the merits of Britney Spears.

When I first started hearing her on the radio, I cringed. Next thing I knew, one of her songs would come on, and I would make it louder.

I think what's annoying is that (some) Britney fans refuse to accept her 'Princess of Pop' crown is under threat. I like her music as much as the next person, she's fronted (keyword there) some fantastic pop songs and she is a musical icon...but, she's been resting on her laurels and hasn't been relevant as a pop star (not a tabloid celebrity) for years. She's only kept the title because nobody since has really had that kind of popularity, not because she's an incredible talent who can't be topped.
Gaga is genuinely the first threat to Britney and perhaps even Madonna, she does everything they can...but better. All she needs is to prove sustainability, which she has so far (the second round of songs from The Fame Monster look to top those of The Fame) and I have high expectations for the future because she has the re-invention element that's worked for Madonna and Christina.
