I don't put much faith in the "invisible" hand of the market fixing every problem, but Lampanelli may have have hit on an additional practical response to the Westboro church's evil shenanigans:
Turn their presence into a fund raiser. Why not? Solicit financial pledges per protester, as one might with miles for the AIDS WALK.

They feel it's their job to let the world know that we're all going to burn. It's great that she's making donations, but don't think it will cause these yahoos to get their panties in a twist.

If Westboro's presence can be an empowering fund raising tool, it doesn't matter if they stop or not.
No one is going to change their minds or stop their right to do what they do, but smart moves like Lampanelli's can shift/share focus from/with Westboro's message of hate to one of hope.

I don't know how much they hate it. It's one more thing that gets them talked about. Shirley has a sense of humor. I think she's a bloody nutburger, but she usually laughs at things like that in her weird "don't let them realize I know I am full of $hit" way of hers.
Turning it into anything positive is a great thing. Have you seen America's Most Hated Family and America's Most Hated Family In Crisis? They are losing their grip on some of the younger people. I don't think Shirley and that group will stop until they die (of natural causes, of course.)
