I could not imagine my life without my IBM Thinkpad. I've had pretty much no trouble with it for the past 4 years and it's been EVERYWHERE with me!

You're lucky! My Thinkpad had a small... death incident.

The new HPs are very reliable and have been very highly rated by Consumer Reports, PC Mag, and others. My old laptop (Compaq) died a few months ago, and I got the new HP after doing LOTS of research. I'm very happy with it and would highly recommend it!

Really? Because I've had HP...issues, to put it kindly. Maybe they've turned themselves around.

Ok, I'm saving up money for a PC in the $1000 range...more or less and I really need some good recommendations.

A friend of mine told me that a desk top would be the best bet since I'm going to spend that much anyway and I would get a lot more for my money. Plus he told me that laptops work for about 2 years then crash on you and that a desktop wouldn't do that. However, I really would prefer to get a laptop because I can take it with me and my room is very small and has so much junk in it anyway.

What I really want to use the PC for is for multitasking without having to worry about considerable slow down. For classwork, but also games (like the Movies or maybe even World of Warcraft) and even internet streaming for those figure skating comps occuring on Eurosport or CCTV. I'll also be downloading a lot of mp3s and figure skating vidz on it too.

If I want to do all that should I just go with the desktop or would I be able to get a great laptop that could do that and won't break on me in 2 years?

Thanks.

You're going to need a fast processor, possibly with a separate graphics subsystem for your gaming. At least 512MB, maybe 1GB of memory. For $1000, you might want to consider a desktop, because a laptop with the same features will probably cost more. Don't forget to take the cost of a monitor into account.

So if I get a laptop with 1gb processor, I should be ok?

I just don't want to spend all that money on a laptop only to be in the same situation 2 years from now.

1 gig, 1 DIMM leaves room for improvement. Whether you'll be able to get that and other features for your preferred price tag is questionable, I think.

my toshiba is ok, but it does break every so often, thank god for 3 year warranties at Best buy! I'm dying for a Sony Vaio, they look awesome, but I have to pay off my Toshiba first...

I dunno but for as much as I use my laptop it's held together for the most part, the times it's broken has mainly been my fault (overuse, viruses and the like)...

though i think once i pay it off i'm really gonna be looking to sell it...

My Gateway Tablet PC was just stolen (car break-in). I've never used a Mac on a regular basis, but I like the look of them and admire Apple as a company.

On trying one out, I didn't find it to be much different than a PC in the long run--there's just a different way to do everything.

Here's my challenge:
*******SOMEONE CONVINCE ME I WANT TO PURCHASE A MAC*******

I THINK i'd like one, I just have no really good reason to not stick with PC when so many more people use them...if I found some really good reasons why Macs are better, I might be brave enough to make the switch, but right now, I'm too scared :P

Also, I want a 12 inch something--the new power books look pretty cool, but will there be a 12 inch version?

Don't be afraid! I grew up on PC's, and I switched to a Mac a few months ago. The adjustment period is really quick, and everything is just so much simpler and makes more sense. I mean, I switched because I was sick of so many problems with my PC, and getting a Mac was an easy way to eliminate all of that.

I have a Powerbook, so I don't really know very much about the new Macs with Intel processors, but the 12 inch Powerbook (which I almost bought, but I went with 15) is really tiny.

The new 12" iBooks will probably be released next week. There is no reason to be scare to switch to a mac. You will wonder why you had not done it earlier. It could not be easier and trouble free. If there are specific questions feel free to ask them.

Wait- when you say 'new 12-inch iBook', do you mean the Power Book, or a new version of the iBook (isn't the iBook the white one?)

I do love my brand new Dell Inspiron 6000. Although, I had someone else build it for me, so I really don't know much about it other than the name. Ha. But I like it.

I've never used a Mac in my life. So I can't really comment.

Eeek, 12-inch? Being lightweight is a virtue, but I'm not willing to give up so much monitor space. You'll have to sidescroll a TON.

14-inch is just enough for me. I photo-edit and sometimes wish I had 15 inches or more.

"I didn't mean powerbook...i meant MacBook Pro. Will there be a 12-inch version of that?"

Apple will be introducing some new products on Tuesday. No one is sure what they will be but there is speculation that some new Laptops will be among the mix.

As for the 12" issue, I use a 12" Powerbook everyday and the screen space is quite fine. I've also found that, for me, it's the best size for traveling. Getting a much bigger laptop and lugging it around is not my idea of portable. I've seen people with 17" laptops in huge bags or briefcases and they may as well be traveling with a desktop machine.

Yeah, that's kind of extreme, though I guess if you're in film editing or something it could make sense. But I'd rather have a dock and an external double monitor setup at that point.

When you choose a laptop, donot only consider about the brand, but also the class. Is it business-class or personal-class? Business-class is much better and more expensive than personal-class.

My laptop is IBM thinkpad t23. It is old but very reliable. IBM T series is business-class. Of course it is expensive. However, I chose a rather old type which was a lot cheaper. And it can fulfill the basic function of document processing and browsing internet without problem.

My suggestion is buying the best brand best series even if you have to choose an older type to cut the budget. Laptop should be focused on reliablility much more than speed.

For me, if you want to play game or do image processing, go buy a desktop for less than $400. Laptop is laptop. It has its specialties.

I was just wondering if you guys recommend a Sony Vaio if you're getting a laptop.

I won't. It's fancy, but almost as expensive as IBM thinkpad. And if I have money, I definitely will choose thinkpad.

If I want to save money, I will go to Dell.

Ah, thanks Sanda. I was seriously thinking about a Vaio.

My Dell Inspiron 1100 is nice, but I had a lot of problems with it. My CD/DVD drive won't play CDs of any kind for some reason, but it will play DVDs. I also had problems with in the past and both of my USB ports broke. I'm sure a lot of it was my fault, but I really don't want to go to a Dell right now.

For laptops I wouldn't mind paying nearly up to $2000 for them as long as they are reliable and perform well.
