It's been awhile.
Schindler's List
American Beauty
The English Patient.
Oh, my!
The English Patient definitely deserved the Oscar.

English Patient over Shine? And Fargo? And Breaking the Waves? And Sling Blade? And Trainspotting? And Ghosts of Mississippi?
I mean, it was a good movie, but not particularly new or inventive...and the script was all over the place thematically.
English Patient soooo deserved it.
The English Patient and Ghosts of Mississippi in the same breath?
Ghosts of Mississippi was horrible.

I am adding my vote to the English Patient detractors.
I would have prefered to see any of the movies touchme listed win instead.
I didn't get the hype behind Ghosts of Mississipi. THere were several shots in that movie where I actually saw the boom mikes, or whatever they're called...

Oh hell yes. I personally hated Sling Blade and as much as I enjoyed Shine and Fargo, I think English Patient is a better film. And don't get me started on Trainspotting, we'll be here all day.
I had to go to a listing of Best Pictures, as I have no clue what won, and for me, I go all the way back to 1976 - ROCKY. Some of my least favorite films are on that list, particularly after 1976! Such dreary films.
I have learned recently, not just from this thread, there are few BWW's with taste in movies that is even remotely similar to mine.
I'll say Wings.
rocky over all the president's men is a travesty.
And were you even BORN in 1976, Brendan?
I hated Trainspotting too...but I think Fargo should have won over The English Patient.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who hated Sling Blade.
poppy, were you potty trained yet in 1976?
I'm not the one claiming Rocky is the last film to win the Oscar that deserved it, don't change the subject. And who says I'm even potty trained now?

I just don't buy the psychological retelling of English Patient -- it missed the main thrust of the novel, which bothered me greatly. It also had so many historical problems, it was hard to watch. It got saved by its BRILLIANT cinematography.
No, but I've seen films made in 1976. Films are as current as the moment they are playing. What's being born have to do with anything?! ROCKY is a great film. Seriously, can any of you THE ENGLISH PATIENT weirdos, actually watch that film again? If I had a gun I would have blown my brains out, that's how bored I was watching that thing, once. Horrible!
