I think she is so great. I know her work extends far beyond Roseanne, but I just love her on that show. She is so brilliant.

She is brilliant. And there are a few episodes that include her singing and she sounds as though she has a voice. I bet she'd be fierce on a stage.
She is truly wonderful on Roseanne. She was also fabulous on an episode of Malcolm In The Middle as Jane Kaczmarek's sister - and the resemblance was uncanny.
She is a truly sweet woman. I loved working with her on Roseanne and can't figure out why she hasn't gotten her own series.
She is amazing. I think she's perfect for the theatre...such a character actress...very versatile. I hope to see her in the spotlight again, soon.

She's done stagework over in Europe, so I'm sure she'll be back over here soon.
Yes, she trained with Steppenwolf, so she does has a theatre background.
Jeez, Diva. You met Lucille Ball...you worked on "Roseanne"...can I have your life for a day, please?
Her huge monologue in Balm In Gilead is still recalled with awe by those who were lucky enough to see it. Sadly, I wasn't and my exposure to the joys of Ms Metcalf are limited to Roseanne and a few movies but I was lucky enough to see her in a fantastic production of All My Sons at the National Theatre a few years back. She was incredible.
Uh, not only did she TRAIN with Steppenwolf, but I think she's one of its founders.

My wife was a stand by in a film with Laurie (many years ago) and was awed by her incredible comic sense and timing.

Ms. Metcalf will forever be remembered by me as having uttered one of the great lines in movie history (from Desperately Seeking Susan): "Why don't you take a pill like a normal person?"
This is one appreciation thread I can get behind. She's a magnificent actress who, even if she never did anything else, would go down in sitcom history for one scene: the telephone call to Auntie Barbara after her and Roseanne's father died.
Any one else remember that one?

The best compliment of her talent is the fact that when watching reruns, you can see Rosanne's acting improve greatly over the years - a phenomoenon I attribute to working with Ms. Metcalf. I also noticed that as Sara Gilbert grew up on the show, her acting style - line readings - timiong, etc. began to resemble Metclaf's.
Great talent can't help rubbing off on those around it.
Jarico and I saw Laurie in Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune last year and she was WONDERFUL. I was always a fan of hers, but it was the first time I saw her live. She just makes it look so EASY. I don't understand why she never got her own sit-com. She's brilliant and hilarious.
