Very nice. I think "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was one of Clinton's lowest moments as President. But now, using the 2003 Supreme Court decision that overturned state laws against gay sex, maybe that policy can be changed.

I honestly believe that Clinton HAD to sign it (and DOMA) to prevent harsher legislation--I mean look at the swift and heavy reaction toward gay marriage in Mass and in Cali.

Gays need to be allowed to serve openly. It's a huge hypocrisy--anytime we go to war, the discharges go WAY down. It's just nonsense. I highly recommend CONDUCT UNBECOMING by Randy Shilts.

One of these days "Don't Ask Don't Tell" will go the way of "Seperate But Equal". It will be outlawed, yet still practiced in this country.

I dunno. In the end, the Army is relentlessly practical. I think there will always be instances of every kind of prejudice in there simply because it's made up of human beings, but institutionalized bigotry is just counter-productive, and eventually they'll discover that, just as they discovered that separating troops by race doesn't work too well.

I think what Cliton did pissed off people on both sides of the issue. But I also think that is what a good compromise is... anyone agree?

I'll only go if I can be a WAC!

Oh, who am I kidding? I'm thirty...by the time they call my number, I'll be geriatric.

Don't Ask Don't Tell is just as discriminatory and threatening as not allowing gays to join in the first place. There is no REAL difference.

My cousin was in the Air Force and as much as he loved it, he left it (and this was during Don't Ask Don't Tell) because he felt very oppressed.

oh, I agree that DADT sucks. I just think it sounded good on paper, thus, it seemed to be a compromise Clinton could make.

However, MORE gays per year are kicked out of the military than before DADT.

It's sick.

This is just bull****. They could care less who fights when we are low on troops...but until then, gays cannot fight for their country.

In American History 1945-Present, I am currently learning about equal rights in the 1960s...previously we studied Vietnam. About five times a day in class, I will "laugh" outloud. That is, because I feel like I am LIVING in THAT time period.

a point often dramatized on "american dreams." you should seriously watch (it resumes jan 2nd 8/7 central on nbc). the similarities are like, woooow. like meg put on henry v with a veitnam/anti-war theme and the headmaster freaked out and tried to stop them... very interesting things about oppression, including the gay character Donald who was fired when his boss found out he was gay. like things like that don't happen any more?

(no, i will not stop shilling!)

amen! That is one of the reasons that I believe that American Dreams is one of the best, and most underrated, shows on Television.
