Posted: 2/8/08 at 2:19pmNow that I have your attention, I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with leather furniture and their dogs, particularly with nails tearing the material. We are starting to think about refurnishing our living room, and we are reluctant to go with leather furniture because Dunkin, our schnoodle, is a lapdog. Any feedback is appreciated.

Got my attention!
They make several types of spray that repel dogs--Petco carries them and I'm sure some of the chi-chi dog stores like fetch would as well.

Look at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams furniture. It's stylish and made for their bulldog, Lulu (below the armchair), who sadly died in December.

I have two ridgebacks with nails the size of fingers and another Jack-X. They haven't scratched the leather -- but they don't go up there without blankets on them. Wasn't too hard to teach them to stay off without the blankets cause they didn't like the feel of the leather. It's also a lot easier to keep free of dog hair, slobber, etc...so yah, its working out better than the old upholstery.

We have Mitchell Gold ultrasuede couch and dining room chairs.
The couch is Miss-Holly-proof, without any sprays (which can stain leather).

Posted: 2/8/08 at 3:18pmWell, I inherited 2 beautiful Italian leather couches from my neighbor, but found out too late that my CAT loved to practice gymnastics on them and unfortunately, her claws have scratched (mostly) the arms of the sofas. I tried putting blankets on them at first, but "munchkin" would throw them off when I wasn't home. So now I tell people that my couches are supposed to look like that! It depends on how nuts you'll get when you see new claw marks every day. I AM going to seek out that spray and see if it works.

Posted: 2/8/08 at 3:26pmI also used to keep the cat away with just a spray bottle of water--it's negative re-inforcement, but harmless. I'd spritz her when she was someplace she wasn't supposed to be.

I do that with my cats and ONE rug I have.
For some reason, the bottle works for everything BUT this one rug. I can't get them to stop clawing at it.

Posted: 2/8/08 at 4:07pmHm--I'd try to find capsacin then--you can sometimes find it powdered--it's the "hot" ingredient in peppers--also found in aspirin
