I saw her perform live with Peter, Paul, and Mary when I was very young. That performance still haunts me to this day.

Here is a video of the song I saw her sing as a duet with Mary.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Oh yes, I remember her from a film made before my time:
"Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child"
Pier Paolo Pasolini's Il Vangelo secondo Matteo
It's about the only Biblical film I can stand watching, just for the way in which it was done! Neo-realism and metaphor poetically portrayed. A beautiful old film.

It' s an unforgettable scene when the Three Wise Men enter Bethlehem and the soundtrack is Odetta's voice:
Sometimes I feel Like a Motherless Child,
Sometimes I feel Like a Motherless Child,
Sometimes I feel Like a Motherless Child,
A long, long way from my home...

Sorry I'm late to this thread, Capn! I loved Odetta. My father was a huge folk music aficionado, and he used to play her albums for me when I was a child.

I can't believe you got to see her live! With Peter, Paul & Mary, no less. I'm sure it was an incredible concert.

As for Odetta, she was in a league all by herself. Truly a legend. They don't make 'em like her anymore. Never will again, I'm sure.

Here is the scene from the Pasolini film I mentioned. It doesn't have the full impact taken out of context from the film, but it is still a beautiful scene.
