What exactly is considered to be legit music theatre material?

im supposed to have one for a college audition and i want to make sure i know exactly what they are looking for.

their exact words were to prepare a song from a legitimate musical theatre production (no standards or pop repertoire, please)

are there any legit shows for someone with a more contemporary sounding voice?

When they say a legit music theatre song, they mean a song actually from a show. Meaning not a standard like Frank Sinatra but a song from an actually musical theatre show. Any actually musical is legit. They just don't want people to come in and sing Kelly Clarkson

Whatever you decide on, I highly suggest choosing something from a classic musical (pre-1980s).

thats what i trying to go for. i wanted to find something in my repertoire that i can work with, but a lot of my stuff is pretty contemporary.

the stuff i have in my rep are

Love, look away from Flower Drum Song
Once you lose your heart from Me and My Girl
If he really knew me from They're Playing Our Song

do you guys think any of these are good choices or should i explore more options? im going to ask my teacher for advice to, its not that im clueless or anything, i just don't want to mess up this audition.

I would axe Once You Lose Your Heart. Not to be a jerk but its not very hard. The other two are good choices though!

Oh I totally know what you mean, and it didn't come of jerkish or anything. its a super easy song, it's my "that was nice" song. lol.

im probably going to keep working on the other two and then see what my voice teacher thinks. thanks for the input you guys.

Sometimes an amazing acting/singing performance of a simple song is better than trying to sing something really difficult that you can't focus on being connected to the material because you are trying to sing the song.
