Phyllis, much as I don't necessarily like her as a person or all of her art, she is a fairly talented young auteur, not some YouTube celebrity propped up into a household name.

This actually raises a rather different question- is it just me, or do the lists of "talented auteurs" and "somewhat perverse, unpleasant or shady people" overlap almost completely? Is there something about the act of creating art primarily in a creative vacuum that breeds this type of person, or is it the other way around? Or are there some completely normal, not at all morally/ethically/socially dubious auteurs?

Charlie Chaplin. Roman Polanski. Lena Dunham. Pete Townshend. Woody Allen. All of whom I enjoy as artists, but would certainly not want to spend much personal time with. Can someone name some nice and respected auteurs who aren't bigoted, rapey or slimy in some way or another?

"somewhat perverse, unpleasant or shady people" overlap almost completely?

If you want to know the truth, somewhat perverse, unpleasant or shady people overlaps almost completely with HUMANITY.

But you know what, this is what we get after 30 years of pathologizing EVERYTHING. Lena is falling on the sword of sexual predators and then turns around and implies that the OLD MEN who are using her words against her have something to hide, like sexual predators. This is the terrible loop the culture is about to get caught in.

I do think that Townshend should be taken off your list. While it's easy to dismiss him working with the cops as him being an old crazy pedophile, he was not only cleared by the cops, but he also said that he did what he did because he himself was sexually abused as a child. That's where the song "Fiddle About" from Tommy came from.

But, I digress I do feel that this whole situation with Dunham is simply her once again coming off as too full of herself, and also her thinking that she's edgier than she really is.

I don't think Townshend is a predator, and I believe his story after reading his book. And I consider him a genius, one of the few people to actually succeed at combining popular music with modernist classical material. But by all accounts he is obsessed to an unsettling degree with issues of child abuse, pornography and the sexual exploitation of minors- almost every album he's written since "Tommy" has dealt explicitly or implicitly with his own molestation or the molestation of someone else, with "Psychoderelict" dealing autobiographically and openly with his own story.

I would not be the first to say that his coping through art has manifested in some rather dubious and occasionally unsettling ways, nor the first to say he has a reputation of being hard to work with. One needn't be a predator to be a little creepy, which, as a big fan, I still admit that he is.

^^^^^^

I can totally see where you're coming from, and, to be honest, am on the fence about whether or not I totally agree. On one hand, I do think that it's a bit much that he seems obsessed with issues of child abuse, child pornography and the sexual exploitations of minors, you're right on that count. However, despite my young age, I have happily gotten my hands on anything and everything Who related from music to books about them.

My impression from the information that I've read, is that Townshend is someone who has a tendency to obsess over things both musical and otherwise. However, he tends to do it in such a way that only makes sense to him, leaving him frustrated when others have trouble following along. A perfect example of this is with his music. Townshend came up with the idea for a rock opera called "Lifehouse." This was supposed to be the follow up to "Tommy."

Later on, Townshend recorded "Lifehouse" with his solo band. When it was released, the thought was that there were some great songs on it but the plot was very hard to figure out.

I generally think that just like he focused for years on the "Lifehouse" project, mainly in ways that only made sense to him, that he does so in other ways. Specially with what he was doing with working against child abuse and child porn and the like. I think that that is something that can be a turn off to other people who don't understand that.
