Hi, I’m 14 and my theatre group is doing the SE of Les Mis. The youngest will be 8 and the oldest, 18. It is my absolute favourite show and I am desperate to get a part other than ensemble. I am a soprano with a strong belt and can hit the high C needed for Cosette without it sounding harsh or strained but that is the almost at the top of my range. My dream role is Fantine but because of the ages, I feel I would be too young so I have considered Èponine, although I am aware that she is the most popular role and feel there will be too much competition. I think my best shot is going for Cosette as she would be acceptable age-wise and is not too big of a role, though still major to the plot with beautiful songs. We will be given material from the show specific to characters for auditions but does anyone have any tips on how to present myself, what to wear, and if I am making the right choice?
Thank You

Not trying to be the thread police, but you’ll probably get more/better responses if you post this on the student board.

Just be nice. Dont sing anything from les Mis. And its not the end of the world if you dont get the part. Ensemble for that show is just as fun. Break a leg.

Sounds like she might not have a choice about audition material

No one goes to the student board.

Do you HAVE to pre-determine the role you are auditioning for? I hate that.

Tberes going to be tons of competition for all those roles, dobt kid yourself.

Advice? Wear as long of a skirt or dress that you have, but done get dressed fancy. If you have long hair, keep it down but if it hangs in yoyr face, try a half pony.

Focus on presenting yoyr best self, far more than anything else.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I agree with Dramamama, presenting yourself in the right way is a great way to show your commitment to getting a role. Also, if you must decide which role you are going for Eponine or Cosette seems like the right choice. Fantine is a beautiful role, a personal dream role of mine but if the oldest people there are 18 then I feel like they would give Fantine to someone older. Don't stress too much, you'll do great! Also, being in the ensemble is just as fun especially if it's your favorite show. Have fun!

Unfortunately,we do have to fill in an audition form with the name of the character we will be auditioning for, although there is a ‘to be considered for’ section and will be given audition material accordingly. So basically there are going to be loads of girls all going for the same roles singing the same songs. I know Cosette is a long shot so of course I would be happy to just be in the ensemble but I do know there are fewer sopranos in the company than other vocal types, so I don’t think there will be as much competition for the role as opposed to Èponine. I think I’m going to wear a light blue summer dress ( as we’ve been told to wear something comfy) with a lace collar and have the sides of my hair pinned back so they can see my face. Thank you so much for all the advice.
