Such a bad influence!

Posted: 10/18/09 at 7:20pmI don't believe in all this freedom of expression sh*t. Kids can barely cope with life, because they think they are entitled to everything. The school has rules. What's so horrible about her life because she has to wear a drape? Let her wear a tux after she graduates, or skip the pictures. I'm sure there are other students who would rather wear something else, too.

Posted: 10/18/09 at 8:02pmIf I had come to school for senior pictures wearing attire that was against what we were told, I would not have been photographed. This isn't a matter of sexism or homophobia. The school made it clear that she was supposed to wear a drape, and I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing, but those are the rules... and rules are rules. Her gender and sexual orientation have absolutely nothing to do with that' however, I don't understand why they are taking her picture out of the yearbook. She may not have followed the rules, but they STILL took the picture... and it's too late to say 'no' now.

But it's not like she said, "I don't want to wear the drape, so I'll wear some random article of clothing I brought from home." She wore the tux bib, the other option that all of the boys in the school had to wear. With her short haircut, the person in charge of handing out either drapes or tuxes probably handed her a tux and she decided not to correct them because she typically dresses in boys' clothing.
If she had come in wearing a t-shirt or a button-up, that would be one thing, but she's still wearing one of the two uniforms. It's not like she'd stick out.

The school did not provide the photographer. You don't know that they took the pictures at school and THEN told her her picture couldn't be in the yearbook. She could have easily submitted that picture as the one she wanted - that's what we did. So it's likely not a matter of them changing their minds after the fact.

She wore the same thing half the graduating class wore. Because she wouldn't fit into their gender role, which is VERY feminine, she is being excluded. "All girls wear dresses. All boys wear tuxes." It IS sexist, but the entire practice is sexist. We all took the drape and tux photos, but our casual photos were what appeared in the yearbook.

Funny.
At my high school. We took our pictures how ever we wanted to take them.
Some folks posed with their pets, some with their cars. I had a directors chair with my name on it.
Time to step into the 21st century.

Posted: 10/18/09 at 10:36pmShe's got a tough life ahead of her, if she can't handle the discomfort of putting on a drape, for a yearbook photo. I don't remember high school being about our comfort levels.

Some schools don't take the senior pictures. I had mine done a photo studio.

Posted: 10/18/09 at 11:46pmJohnBoy2, you are right. She does have a tough life ahead of her and it has nothing to do with wearing a drape. Anyone who doesn't fit comfortably into society's ideas of who they are supposed to be has a tough life. If she doesn't want to perpetuate the stereotype of femininity and is comfortable enough with herself to be able to stand up for her individuality at such a young age, then let her. Again, it's not like the boys wore blue, the girls wore pink and she is insisting on green.

If no one had told me she was a girl, and I was flipping through the yearbook, I would NEVER know.
Get over it people.
