More than four decades after he captured women's hearts on television's "Dr. Kildare," Richard Chamberlain has decided to reveal his identity as a gay man "because I'm not afraid anymore."
"I'm not a romantic leading man anymore so I don't need to nurture that public image anymore," the 69-year-old Chamberlain says in an interview to air Sunday on "Dateline NBC."

Apparently. there had been rumors about Chamberlain starting when he was in Dr. Kildaire, but that doesn't mean he was "out."
I never really knew, I always thought he was just polite.
It's nice when people who had only been able to be open about themselves with close friends (like Tommy Kirk of Old Yeller fame and Tab Hunter) finally feel okay about coming out.

As someone who is very critical on this site of performers who feel that being quietly gay is sufficient, I am equally disturbed by cynical posters like Goth who fail to appreciate that no matter how late in a performer's career coming out comes, to speak the words "I am gay" is an act of great courage and should never be diminished by words like, "Well everyone already knew." Such cynical remarks only encourage closeted performers to remain that way, because they will think, if everyone already knows, then why should I come out? There will always be people who assume that a performer is heterosexual (as JoeKv99 did) unless and until the performer comes out. I have "known" for a long time that Lesley Gore is gay, and assumed that her appearances on In the Life were verification of this, but her coming out interview is still a major step in her life journey, and as someone who has been a fan since her debut, I salute Lesley Gore and honor her decision to come out publicly.
