Posted: 11/30/06 at 4:19pmI have seen worse Lit. papers in college, when I had to proof read my roomate, suitemates, and best friend's stuff. While not great, it was written by a high schooler after all.

Posted: 11/30/06 at 4:23pmSeriously, Cheno, you shouldn't be so surprised at spidey's comments. You read this board enough. It really is quite obvious that there is a serious lack of simple grammar/spelling education in the school systems.

Posted: 11/30/06 at 4:26pmI agree, Rath. Schools today care about one thing, and one thing only: High test scores. Instead of taking their time and teaching the kids how to write and proper grammar usage, they are rushing them to learn specific things on those tests. "No child left behind" is a good idea, but the execution of it is totally off balance.

Reading this board is a bit different because it's all in real-time- so I assume that some of the spelling/grammatical mistakes are simply a by-product of careless typing (trying to post something in response to a previous post, etc.)
I could be wrong, though.
And I don't disagree about the problems with our educational system.
I do think that Britney's essay shows that her brain functions at a remedial level when it comes to literary criticism, at least.

Posted: 11/30/06 at 4:34pmI don't disagree with you about her literary skills. However, I cut her a lot of slack - clearly she wasn't born with brilliance, and she wasn't encouraged to seek an education - I'm willing to bet she was DIScouraged, in fact.

I think what bugs me most is how many teenagers look up to people like Britney, Paris Hilton, etc.
At least Britney worked for her success, though. Some of the other ones are such a complete bore, I don't understand the fascination.

People said the same thing about David Cassidy.
I'd hate for any of my high school papers to get published.

I can't believe no one gave me credit for "Pantiesgone". I know it's pronounced differently, but it's a spelling pun!
This is what comes from an edumacated girl, thanks. I'll be here all night, drive safety folks!

Ok I am going to be a high school English paper...and at BEST that paper would have gotten a D. At the very best.
As would have teachers I had. She didn't have the support to be the most intelligent person, and I agree with some of the reasons stated here, but not all high schools just hand out good grades for awful work.
