re: Linda Ronstadt booed at casino

There is a time and a place for everything.

Would the majority of people applaud Idina Menzel for stopping 'Wicked' in its tracks to support George W. Bush?

I doubt it.

People had paid to hear the woman sing (God knows why)... not to hear her views on American politics.

Such a double standard here. 99% of you would decry her if it wasn't in tune with your opinions.

Linda said she was trying to be so annoying the Aladdin wouldn't try and hire her again. What a moron!! Kudos to the people who walked out and demanded their money back. SHUT UP AND SING has been.

re: Linda Ronstadt booed at casino

A concert isn't a musical or a play. It's a performer doing a personal performance as themself, not as a character and not in something scripted by someone else.

She can say what she thinks, people can boo if they don't agree.

The world keeps a'spinning.

But an actor stopping a play to say something personal would be completely different and isn't a valid analogy.

re: Linda Ronstadt booed at casino

"Wicked"=scripted; performer must stick to the story;

concert=no script; performer can tell his or her own story including beliefs.

Totally inappropriate for one venue, completely appropriate for the other.

You mean Galinda and Elphaba aren't real!?

(And who says they're scripted?)

I may not be in agreement, but I would support any performer's right to speak their mind. I am free to stay and listen or leave, as long as I do this in a respectful manner.

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

oh c'mon, linda's a rabble rouser from way back. hell she dated both jerry brown and tom hayden fer chrissakes. she played no nukes in '79 (oh yeah she also banged jackson browne and most of the eagles) and ya thought she'd be quiet at a concert? please, i love her voice and as a youth had the biggest crush on her imaginable (rollerskates and striped socks still knock me for a loop 'cuz of linda), but in this politically charged world to think that she'd get through a concert without a comment like this is just silly.

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

She gave a free concert in Coney Island this month. It shows how her career is going but I digress. 90% of the people in the casino were probably comped and they walked out. Did she think she would change people's vote? Did she try and alienate the audience? Is she twisted?

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

Nice try, keaton. I can't even IMAGINE what kind of pandering would go into the decision to escort Rondstadt off the hotel property and not let her stay the night because of a comment about a movie. Is that YOUR America?

I can just imagine that when keaton read papa's post there was that sound of a record needle scratching like they use in every other NBC promo spot. Errrrrrrehhhhhhhhhht. "Oh gee," I imagine him thinking, "I thought this is what papa would have written and then he'd like me, really like me!"

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

Before you all ignite the torches, let me say this:
Concerts are not meant to be political rallies. I've attended many concerts where there is little to no banter at all.

I was unaware of her history, papa.

Valid analogies aside, the point is... shut up and do your hacky concert.

I still maintain that there would be a whole different timbre if the support was shouted from the other side of the aisle.

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

now folks do try to keep in mind that linda's first big hit was the 1967 nugget, "different drum," penned by erstwhile monkee mike nesmith (this was pre- sunset sam era). so she's keeping up the ideal that brought her fame and notice.

Tell that to Toby Keith and 75% of the country superstars in this country who pander in concert to the basest instincts of yahoos much like yourself, keaton, all the way to the bank. "Shock 'n' Y'all" indeed.

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

i've never been one to let pleas from the stage alter my views of performers. if laura bell bum-licious can call, "vote kerry," from the stage at the standing ovations concert without it affecting my lust in the least, then linda can make her own off the wall proclamations. after all, even several hundred pounds later, she's still that cutie in roller skates to me.

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

I can't imagine a society where a property owner who pays someone to entertain in their space can't get rid of said performer for being an ass.

Oh no! I said something, I'm afraid that the troll will come out of the shadows and say something mean (yet very constructive and on topic, I imagine) about me!

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

No, CKeaton, no. Concerts are supposed to be whatever the performer wants them to be. It's not any performer's job to keep you from hearing things you don't want to hear or talk about things you don't want them to talk about. It's not Linda Rondstadt's job to make her performances as anti-septic as possible to make sure her entire audience has an earnest and temperate evening devoid of thoughts or ideas.

Imagine someone bitching at a Lynyrd Skynrd concert that it was too right wing and that the Confederacy was really a heinous and evil government and that the band should eliminate all aspects of Southern Pride from their stage presentation. Yeah, THAT would go over well.

Imagine if Mick Foley let his political views fly from mid-ring. He'd be missing more than a bit of ear by the end of the "unscripted" violence.

F-me for adding some color to the discussion... Here let me try this, it'll be good for the conversation.

"Yes. I totally agree. Yay Linda! She's hot like a spork."

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

lynyrd skynyrd should not be performing anywhere, ever. what's left? 2 original members? if that? gary's gotta let it go.

i just now found an article on this controversy and i'm a little disappointed. she dedicated one song to him? please.

people ought to see this for what it is: a blatant attempt to distract the country from the fact that sandy berger likes to stick top secret documents down his pants and then destroy them.

re: linda ronstadt booed at casino

Actually most wrestlers are right-wing (as many athletes tend to skew that way as well,) And wrestlers don't spew their politics on the shows because wrestling, like theater, is a scripted product where they are portraying characters who may or may not have the same social/political viewpoints as the person portraying them. (Wrestling is fake, you know.)

Plenty of wrestlers talk about their politics at personal appearances or when they're on talk shows (Ric Flair recently spent time with the President, several wrestlers have retired and run for office as Republicans, John Bradshaw Layfield was a political analyst for CNBC, for example.) It doesn't affect my interest in them as performers, though, because I don't mind people expressing opinions I don't agree with, even if their job is to 'entertain' me otherwise. Nor are they obligated to not talk about their politics or beliefs when they're on TV, just because someone in the wrestling audience might be more liberal than they are and, thus, might think differently about the person if they hear them speak out on an issue.

Ah gee shucks, papa...
(Lets see if this will get you to like me... please, please, please... I need love because my daddy done left me, and I gots no love of my own.)

I thought it was more blatant propoganda for a film full of distortions and half-truths? Mickey Moose wast right there to issue a press release singing "America the Beautiful" and a free screening of the movie... Can anyone spell publicity stunt? Maybe it will make him another million. Yippee!
