I remember that production of "Night Music" getting a rave from "Variety"
And the character she played in "Whorehouse" was Doasty Mae. I remember thinking when I saw it that it was a crime to even use the name since they cut the song.
I've always liked her.
Regarding that "Twilight Zone" episode, whenever it is bitterly cold outside I always wonder if somewhere Lois Nettleton is dreaming that it is very hot...
I saw her Blanche at the Kennedy Center, pre or post St. James, when the Stanley was a smoldering Allan Feinstein. She was remarkable -- and the production dared to play the Opera House, not the smaller Eisenhower. She was the most statuesque, and the most 'sane' Blanche you could imagine. She tore into the role with a kind of size and energy that matched Feinstein's. It was as if Stella gotleft ouf of the triangle -- the chemistry between these two was that potent, and it gave the play a very immediate drive.
Aside from her palpable attraction to Stanley, she found a kind of blazing normalcy in Blanche -- you could see the school teacher, this billiant, witty southern woman who channeled all her drive and creativity into the classroom, seemingly her only intellectual option. Her hold on her sanity was more secure, so that she didn't anticipate the breakdown at the ending. I'll never forget it. It was the revamped Lincoln Center production, minus Rosemary Harris.
Wow, Auggie, thanks for the post. That was a great review of her performance. I enjoyed reading it and am more than a little jealous that you got to see it.
I still can't find any news of her death besides on message boards.
Well, if nothing else, this has become a "Lois Nettleton" thread, even if it doesn't herald her passing.
Glebby---I found that "Night Music" clip again on YouTube:

And both posts are right about her character in Best Little Whorehouse. On Broadway, she was called Doatsey Mae, and in the film, the name was changed to Dulcie Mae.
And they cut her song.
Best, I know. I feel kind of stupid having started this but I had seen so many people post it on other boards. Now one of those boards is saying she is seriously ill at the Motion Picture Home in Woodland Hills. Anway, she's a good actress.
Thanks Best.
I hope she is OK.
Looks like it's official.

I never knew she was married to Jean Shepherd.
Always thought she was a very good actress and very attractive. Had no idea she was 80 though. Thanks for the update. mom
Best Little Whorehouse is another good Broadway musical butchered by Hollywood.
That's very sad. Besides being a wonderful actress, she remained a stunning beauty all her life. May she rest in peace.
Sorry to hear that she's gone.
Period of Adjustment was one of her better theatrical films. Too bad it's not on DVD yet.
Me too, Glebby.
She was one my childhood favorites.
I'm really sorry that this turned out to be true. She was a wonderful talent. Miss Penny..me too. She was one of those actresses that I grew up with.
