Bta, I'm so with you. Man, I think I'm gonna crack that DVD out.

One of ALW's best tunes - and the lyrics are so brilliant, too, sitting with the notes perfectly. I remember seeing an interview with ALW and he said he was so impressed with Ball's range that he changed the key to give him that final note. It's obviously Ball's signature now and he still sings the hell out of it. However, I don't think I'll ever enjoy his singing it more than he did in the show. Interesting, too, that ALW always said he wanted to open a show with a solo male tenor voice with piano. He did so with 'Aspects' but it's only the first few bars. Anyone else like 'Seeing Is Believing'? Again, beautiful melody with perfect lyrics - 'Whatever happens, one thing is certain, each time I see a train go by I'll think of her, the night, the sky forever.....' I watched an old video recently of a tv programme around the time MB had opened in the show and he performed that number solo, standing by the piano. It was perfection. Thanks for opening the thread, Glebb, and stirring up all these wonderful memories. Until 'Piazza' it was the most romantic show I'd ever seen.
It's beautiful, and noone has matched the vocals of Michael Ball since the original recording....
Addy, I'm so upset now. I had no idea you loved this song. My visiting friend last week ALSO loves this song and I was going to do it as my number two song...but I faded a little too quickly. Had I known, it would have been my first choice. Le sigh.
It's a great song. Of course, the frustrating part in the actual show is that you don't get the big payoff of the ending in the full song, just the really short reprise.
Next time, Bway!
Next time!!
I am listening to my CD this morning. ( I should be thinking about my Joplin, but I'm enjoying listening to Aspects again.) I haven't had it on in a while, and I just love it... Thanks for bringing this up, Glebby.
It's a really interesting show. I am sad I didn't get to do it, especially after the director called to tell me their local choice didn't quite cut it. Ah, well. Next time there's a concert version of "Aspects of Love," I'm sure to be asked!
And I'll be the first to buy tickets!
I remember when it was on Broadway, and I just fell in love with it... despite what so many said about it.
I went over and over and over... Lucky me!

Oh - the memories, the memories. I'm not sure who the Broadway cast were apart from Ball (did Ann Crumb and the wonderful Kevin Colson transfer, too??). I loved George and Jenny's 'The Last Man You Remember'. Perfect father/daughter song and coming at the perfect moment after Jenny appears in 'the dress'. I thought the scene in the cafe early in the show was just lovely when Alex responds to Rose's 'How old are you?'..'In three years I'll be twenty.' And Rose's final 'Don't leave me' was total goosebumps. Nyadgal, so pleased that you loved this show, too. I've always felt in a minority with this one as so many people I spoke to really didn't enjoy it.
Yes, Patti. Kevin Colson and Ann Crumb were on Broadway.
I LOVE 'The Last Man You Remember'... *sigh* (wait, wasn't it the First man you remember?...)
I'm SO glad to know there are other 'fans' around! I was always proud to proclaim my love for this musical... even in the face of the critics. Patti, we Aspects fans have good taste!
Has anyone read the book by Michael Garnett? I'm a big fan of it.
The PERFECT father/daughter song...
GEORGE:
I want to be
The first man you remember,
I want to be
The last man you forget.
I want to be
The one you always turn to,
I want to be
The one you won't regret.
May I be first
To say you look delightful?
May I be first
To dance you round the floor?
The very first
To see your face by moonlight?
The very first
To walk you to your door?
JENNY: (playing to George)
Well, young man, I'd be delighted!
There is nothing I would rather do!
What could be a sweeter memory
Than sharing my first dance with you?
GEORGE:
I want to be
The first man you remember...
JENNY:
The very first
To sweep me off my feet.
GEORGE:
I want to be
The one you always turn to...
JENNY:
The first to make
My young heart miss a beat.
(He gently takes her in a dance hold and they tentatively try a few steps around the terrace)
I have to agree about the Leading Ladies version. I thought the trio of songs was brilliantly done.
I, too, love this song, but I do not like its placement in the show. Knowing nothing about the characters, it is difficult to fully appreciate the song as it relates to the show.
Addy, help me remember the context of "First Man you Remember." Is he singing to his daughter, thinking she is someone else. Or is he singing to his lover, thinking she is his daughter?

Thought I had my old programme lying around somewhere. Here's a couple of pics of 'First Man You Remember' when Jenny is at first with her father and then dances with Alex...
I have to find my ALW Greatest Hits album to listen to this again...
I do love this song. I could hear it over and over.
Unfortunately, the tour was awful. It's the only time I've almost walked out of a show at intermission, but we had to go back just to see how much worse it could get. And it exceeded our expectations. Of badness.
but have you heard NANA MOUSKOURI sing it? huh? huh??
But of course. Timeless.
Yes love, love changes everything....
Still love this song! I rank this high in the best theatre songs ever written!
Hands and faces,
Earth and sky,
Love,
Love changes everything:
How you live and
How you die
Love
Can make the summer fly,
Or a night
Seem like a lifetime.
I *love* this song, and Michael Ball's version is perfection. *goes to listen*
