The show, which was held over for several months in Los Angeles, is unabashedly emotional--which was too messy for the London critics, plus I don't think the Brits are as into 12-step recovery stories as we Americans are. They tend to see them as self-congratulatory, and, well, they are!
Loving Lorna Luft has always been more difficult than loving other divas: she lacks the vulnerability of her mother and the electricity of her sister. But, like Horton, she has always said what she meant and meant what she said. That gives her a tough-girl air that can rub people the wrong way. But being a little tough was how Lorna survived, something that is worthy of its own respect: She's been through Brenda Frazier, so to speak, and she's here.
Lorna's just an old-fashioned belter whose voice can pop popcorn. To hear her sing those arrangements is nothing short of thrilling.
