Diastema (dentistry)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Diastema is a gap or space between two teeth. The term is most commonly applied to be an open space between the upper incisors (front teeth). It happens when there is an unequal relationship between the size of the teeth and the jaw. Many species of mammals have diastema as a normal feature, for example the gap between molars and incisors in rodents.
Diastema is sometimes caused or exacerbated by tongue thrusting or the pulling action of a labial frenulum (the tissue around the lip), which can push the teeth apart.
In the Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote of the "gap-toothed wife of Bath." As early as this time period, the gap between the front teeth, especially in women, had been associated with "lustful" characteristics. Thus, the implication in describing "the gap-toothed wife of Bath" is that she is a "middle-aged" woman with insatiable lust. This has no scientific basis, but it has been a popular assumption in folklore since the Middle Ages.
In Nigerian society, diastemata are regarded as attractive, and some people have even had them created through cosmetic dentistry.[1]
Les Blank's Gap-Toothed Women is a documentary film about diastematic women.

just cuz they take her picture don't make her any less ugly. the fact that you have no taste changes nothing.

She wasn't hanging at CBs in the '80s. She was at Danceteria. Though in her unreliably narrated legend I'm sure she was there at the first Ramones show.

Madonna was the definite shoe-in.

I wonder if Joe Strummer will ever get into the Hall of Fame for his solo work? I finally got the post-humous Mesacaleros album after seeing The Future is Unwritten and it might well just be the best cd of the first half of this decade.
Oh, and what made me think of it, papa, was the live version of MC5 doing Kick Out the Jams on the soundtrack.
You know. Rock and Roll.

doesn't have to be popular at all..
there are many unpopular opinions and loves i have...
but as stated..
good for madonna for getting inducted.
like her or not...she deserves it.
no need to knock it....
no need to harbor negative energy towards it...
and spew it venomously.
don't knock mine...don't need to knock yours.
you are arguing with yourself my love.
calling her a 'gap-toothed ugly wannabe' was a bit,....extreme.
and ridiculous
as stated in the article:
"The 2008 inductees are trailblazers — all unique and influential in their genres," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman said in a statement. "From poetry to pop, these five acts demonstrate the rich diversity of rock and roll itself."
To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.
Madonna Louise Ciccone signed with Sire Records in 1982 and became one of MTV's first stars two years later with "Like A Virgin." She has constantly altered her image and appearance ever since, showing staying power that few '80s stars could muster.
From rosaries and bare midriffs to cone-shaped bras, Madonna's reinvention of herself has been as prolific as her chart dominance, which included seven No. 1 hits and three No. 1 albums in the '80s alone.
The actress and fashion icon created plenty of controversy along the way, drawing the ire of religious leaders in 2006 for a scene of Madonna on a mirrored cross and wearing a crown of thorns as part of her worldwide "Confessions" tour.

Was it just the one?
Broadway Legend Joined: 12/31/69
yeah,..
i wonder if
Brenda Lee
the Shirelles
Gladys Knight
etta james
are considered rock as well.
they seem to be in.
Madonna has contributed more music and classic singles than all of them combined.
plus...if You're still talking about her and continue to spend your energy on her....then she's pretty much done her job.
namo has been discussing her on these boards for YEARS.
COllectively...he alone has made hundreds of comments on her on these boards....he must love her inside.
because he didn't spend the energy on anything else but her for years.
and you still continue to post about her in a negative tone. ridiculous.

Oh, it's based on classic singles? Then why not call it The Classic Singles Hall of Fame? Because the place in Cleveland is called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and this inclusion makes no sense.
is Madonna THE first pop artist to be inducted?

SO you think madonna didn't influence a generation or two with her music, her songs, or influenced other artists? or influenced the way music videos are made? or fashion? or live concert tours or the way she has given to the world as a humanitarian? or how she was on the forefront for female power and taboo subjects? sexuality?
because all of that is technically "rock and roll" as well.
less than Gladys Knight or Brenda Lee has?
Etta James or the SHirelles?
because they have been inducted in the past..
and i wonder what that criteria was...since they have NOTHING to do with rock.
explain them....
I love love Madonna
bec. I grew up listening to her MUSIC... you know when youre a gay teenager... in a Catholic Parochial School- there's really no singers I can relate being Asian--
growing up in US.. but Madonna really changed all that--
After I saw her LIKE A PRAYER video and my whole world change... I finally understood why I am inlove with this boy next to me..... "you know I'll take you there" ...youre a muse to me..... you are a mystery...
I came out during her EROTICA album.... the first time I went in the gay bar.. the first song they played was DEEPER & DEEPER.... then I saw this blonde kid looking at me...the disco ball......"Someone says that Romance is dead.... but you remind me what my papa thought me"
First break up with that kid - RAIN.... I feel like I am in Japan.....
She has so much profound influence on me.... she may not be talented.. but she guided me thru my High School & College days....thru her songs....
If my life will be musicalized in a juke box style.. definitely Madonna's songs..
I am soo happy for Madonna..
and its about DAMn F*CKing time !!!
Absolutely no regrets !!!! (Human Nature)

well then it sounds like the rock n roll hall of fame has a wider umbrella of what is included in the very general term 'rock n roll' than some do. it seems to include music artists who don't necessarily utilize elec guitars and drums and may never have played CBGBs or Webster Hall.
It seems to include all the genres of music that are included in the rock n roll section of the Virgin Megastore or Tower Records (RIP) or Best Buy and clearly artists from other sections of the music store whether they 'rock' or not.
Maybe Madonna 'rolls'.

thats admirable jay.
you and millions of others that she has influenced around the world.
but no...she can't get credit where credit is due.
after 25 years in the business. jeez.
Oops! I didn't know we couldn't talk about Madge.

But it's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I mean, using the everything-under-the-sun criteria being bandied about above, KISS deserves it more than anybody. At least they are rock.
Broadway Legend Joined: 12/31/69
theres TONS of people who deserve it.
but it so happens that madonna's first year of eligibility was this year. and within the 600 music industry insiders that were able to vote..they decided to induct her and John COugar Mellancamp.
Kiss deserves it before John COugar. sure.

I'm just using your success criteria from above, tab. Now it looks like you want to argue from the artistic integrity angle for this portion of the discussion. It's hard to keep up!
But now that you point out that it's "music industry insiders," well, the street cred has gone thru the roof!

heres an article quote from a site insider:
Madonna: I had no doubts she'd be elected, and I have no doubts she merits inclusion. Distinctions between "rock" and pop have long since been erased in the Hall's roster as it's evolved, and you simply can't ignore the biggest solo star of the last quarter-century -- especially when so much of the music she has written and produced is truly great. Not to mention the artists that she has introduced through her own recording company ventures such as Alanis Morrissette and Me'shell Ndgeocello.
