I can remember doing a story shortly after the tsunami where federal officials were applauding themsevles for taking "immediate" action to install such warning devices. Their goal set for installation was the end of January.
The tsunami warning system is going to be completed at the end of 2006, according to the latest UN plan.
To answer EverythingIsRENT's question earlier: yes, the earthquake was felt all over the place, not just along Indonesia's coastline but also inland, as well as in Malaysia, India, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Japan, apparently. Death count is 300 at the moment.

Update, for anyone who's interested: According to the local reports, some coastal areas in southern Aceh were hit by tsunami waves, about 9 - 10 ft in height, after the earthquake last night. It destroyed much of what was left in the area, but there were no casualties reported. Most of the area residents had fled to higher ground immediately after the earthquake.
The death toll from the earthquake itself is predicted to be around 2,000, mostly on the Nias island. There have been 8 aftershocks today.
World Health Organization has allocated USD 10,000 for the emergency relief efforts.

I have only caught up with this news this morning (I went to bed very early last night).
This is terrible, sad news. All my thoughts are going out to the ones being affected by this, once again.
I'm shocked to see that there was hardly any news coverage on this.

yesterday morning.....it was all over CNN, etc.......I didn't mean this morning.
I would assume, sadly, that since there was no major tsunami that it didn't get the coverage after like December did......
With 1000 to 2000 predicted dead, it definately should be getting much more coverage........

That's what I mean... and since my job is on a very different schedule than normal jobs I missed it all. I was suprised it didn't get more coverage, I wasn't saying it didn't get ANY.

"I'm shocked to see that there was hardly any news coverage on this."
Wow, not true at ALL. As someone who works in TV News and had an eye on the competition... all the cable nets were wall to wall with coverage. The networks cut-in with "special reports." The internet was inundated with news of the earthquake. While the news was breaking, and during that 3-hour tsunami window, every news organization I saw was on top of the story. Once the threat of a tsunami was over, most stations broke away from continuous coverage and began covering the event as a "search and recovery," which is hard to do due to limited information coming out of the area. It was, obviously, the big story of the day. The top 3 nets had 3 stories off the top of their shows, CNN, Fox, and MSNBC yapped about it all day and night.
Once the tsunami threat was over it was hard to continue providing continuous coverage since information from that area (death toll, recovery methods) are slow to come in.
As far as today, the networks are still trying to get their correspondents into that area. That's a chore itself.
To say there was "hardly any news coverage on this," is incorrect.

Ok, then this morning on the 5am news. As I said in my earlier post, I have a strange work schedule and was not anywhere near a TV or a paper yesterday all day.

5am news is local news, meaning it's up to your local affiliate what to put into the broadcast. Obviously they are going to provide you with more local news, and leave the big national/international story -- in this case the earthquake -- to the national morning shows to cover at 7am.

Oh, you know which news I was watching this morning?
Anyway, to hopefully end this, I'm relieved that it was covered to a greater extent than I thought it was. I apologize if I offended anyone when I accused the news of not covering this tragedy enough. Next time I check the appropriate websites before opening my big mouth.

I love how specific their next earthquake prediction is. 'Rather than 100 years, it may happen in 20 years, or 50 years.... or in 3 months.' *sigh*
100 days or 100 years, another is on the way
