I work at the movie theatre... and this movie outsold Stealth and Devil's Rejects, and it is still selling strong. It's also sold out 3 times in one day before too.

Korean - I like hearing that
They were smart and did a slow roll-out to let word-of-mouth build. Having a great film hasn't hurt!

Not that it matters in the least, but all this talk about the movie has made me change my icon again

Ok, go ahead.
But don't expect him to answer to it

Just a quick update.
As of yesterday, after 75 days in release, it was number 8 at the box office and approaching 65 million dollars domestic gross. It has passed many of the 'big' summer releases, and continues to enchant people from coast-to-coast.

"The coolest ensemble of the summer, the well-dressed waddling stars of March of the Penguins, comes to DVD Nov. 29 (Warner Home Video, $30). The film follows the annual travails of emperor penguins and their 70-mile trek across Antarctica to their breeding grounds. They mate, give birth, guard their little ones and search for food. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, Penguins has earned more than $70 million in U.S. theaters, making it the second-highest-grossing documentary ever (behind Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, which grossed $119.2 million).
Adding to the experience on DVD is a Bugs Bunny cartoon starring a lost penguin, a documentary on making the film, and a "crittercam" that "allows the DVD audience to watch penguins diving and swimming from the penguin's view," says Warner Home Video's Jim Wuthrich."
And it's STILL in the top ten domestically, and has passed 70 million dollars

Posted: 9/23/05 at 10:47amis it bad when me and my friend went, we sat there quoting the "Madagascar" penguins throughout? we weren't interrupting anyone though... we were in a huge theater with old people who sat in the back and we were 5 rows from the front :P

ok, I read through this thread and didn't see an answer to the one question I have...would children between the ages of 4 and 7 be ok with this movie?
Ihave a couple of nieces and nephews I'd like to take, but before I spend the outrageous ticket costs, I want to be sure this is something they would have the patience to actually sit through.

Posted: 9/23/05 at 12:04pmjustme - the children that have been in the audiences I've seen it with have stayed with it all the way through. There are parts that I would think would lose them, but they seem so fascinated by just looking at the penguins, that they don't seem to lose interest.

Posted: 9/23/05 at 12:28pmGreat! One of the kids is 5 and watches Discovery channel all the time. She loves animals, and quotes bizarre facts to me all the time, such as "Did you know the in SeaHorse life, the daddy carries the babies?", so I think she'll be the perfect candidate for the film.

Posted: 3/16/06 at 8:04pmSaw this last night and was completely blown away, and shocked at how emotionally invested I was in their well-being! Even though I was squirming with pleasure over their "cuteness" and thought the shots were simply breath-taking, I was mostly surprised and touched by the social dynamics of the emperor penguins, both within the family and the pack at large. I laughed, I (almost) cried...I'm very happy it got the Oscar!
