Gay Day Protest
Phillies Allow Anti-Gay Sign to Be Unfurled During Game

By Joseph McCombs and Cyd Zeigler Jr.
Outsports.com

The festive atmosphere of Gay Community Night at the Philadelphia Phillies was interrupted Thursday night when two men unfurled -- with permission of the team -- a banner covering a row of eight seats in the high right-field stands that read, “Homosexuality is Sin. Christ Can Set You Free.” Fans in nearby sections began to boo the men; within minutes, some of the gay and lesbian fans in sections 307 to 309 began approaching the two men and the banner in section 303.

The incident began in the fourth inning, and eight to 10 people stood in front of the banner to block its view, a tactic reminiscent of the “Angels of Peace,” whose giant angel wings blocked the view of Rev. Fred Phelps’s protest signs at the funeral service of Matthew Shepard. The two sign holders were from Repent America, a fundamentalist Christian group opposed to homosexuality. On their website, Repent America claimed: "Phillies Lose, Christians Win."

...Several people wondered aloud what the Phillies’ policy would be if someone brought a sign to Hispanic Heritage Night this Sept. 7 saying, “Hispanics are sinners;” or if a sign that read “Being Asian is Being Evil” would be allowed to stand at Asian Pacific Celebration Night....

It just doesn't seem right.

It is espeicially maddening that the the group supporting the protest, Repent America, had been denied permission for this by the Phillies in previous years, and this year they negotiated support by the team to sanction this protest.

Repent America had this to say on their website [excerpt]

"PHILLIES LOSE; CHRISTIANS WIN 8/19/05

PHILADELPHIA - Yesterday, August 18, 2005 at 7:05 p.m., the Philadelphia Phillies held their third annual "Gay Community Night" at Citizens Bank Park as Repent America (RA) declared the truth about homosexuality outside and inside the ballpark.

"This is the third consecutive year that the Philadelphia Phillies have decided to promote homosexuality by hosting 'Gay Community Night' at the ballpark," stated Repent America director Michael Marcavage. "As in previous years, we returned to minister the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are in bondage to this self-destructive lifestyle, and to call on the Phillies to end their promotion of homosexuality," he continued...

During the game, after RA unfurled the banner from their stadium seats, those in opposition to its message began to demand that the banner come down, but security officials refused to interfere. At one point, two homosexual men stood in front of the banner and began to passionately kiss. In response to this behavior, hundreds of people in the crowd cheered, sparking others to leave their seats to block the banner message. However, security officials and police ordered them to return to their seats. Upon leaving their stadium, at the bottom of the 6th inning, hundreds of homosexuals and their supporters rose to their feet to celebrate RA’s departure while loudly chanting an expletive in unison.

Despite fierce opposition, our time of ministry at the ballpark was a powerful witness to the tens of thousands of people attending the game," Marcavage stated. "It took prayer, perseverance, and a passion to reach the lost. Hard ground was plowed; the Gospel was preached; may others now come and water the seed." Marcavage concluded.

Phillies lose 5-4 to the Washington Nationals."

Would be very interested to see how a "Gay Day" would go over at a Texas Rangers game - will be a cold day in hell before that ever happens, I'm sure.

I ran into those ****tards at a gay street fest in Philly not too long ago. They were waving Phelpsian signs and shouting nonsense. I just blew them a kiss and moved on. I don't know why so many people get in shouting matches with them. That's all they want -- attention. The day after, they posted a story on how they "converted" several people. Yeah. Sure, dudes.

The funny thing is: The fundies are always complaining about how things like this Gay Day expose poor, innocent children to the horrors of homosexuality. Yet, I'll be most kids at the ballpark wouldn't have even noticed the difference until these idiots unfurled their sign.

And MJR, I might be wrong, but I believe the Rangers did indeed have a "gay day" not too long ago.
