Macy's Parade Viewing Questions

Alright- I have been warned by several people that watching the Broadway performances at Macys is not worth the hassle, however, I do still want to see the various floats, bands...etc. Does anyone here have a tip on where the best place to watch is, what time to be there...any other tips...etc.

Two years ago I watched the parade at Columbus Circle, on the block of the Trump building. It was a great location - I think we got there an hour and 15 minutes before it started. There's also a Starbucks right across the street, good for bathrooms and beverages if you get cold.

Was the area blocked off at all?- I heard that Columbus Circle was mostly for VIPs. But if not- that sounds like the perfect spot!
