As ya'll know, my son goes to NYU and he told me his freshman year that Magic Johnson's son was really out there. He said he is very flamboyant! (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) Just wonder why this is news now?

Just as a little side note, a friend of mine and I have a little game we play in the video section of the local department store. The rule is simple: add "Tyler Perry's" to any movie title and see what you get. For example, "Tyler Perry's Avatar", "Tyler Perry's Strictly Ballroom" (which one says as a complete statement, not just a phrase of possession), "Tyler Perry's Gone With the Wind", "Tyler Perry's Thor" (to which one replies, "No he's not! Tyler Perry's Captain America!").

Black people I work with have told me that in general the black community finds homosexuals disgusting. To believe it is not a issue is simply not true.

As for the "black community vs. gays issue"...I'm from TX and most black people are somewhat religious...and just like any race, no matter how hypocritical they might appear with their own life, homosexuality is one issue they don't budge on.

the problem with saying "the black community has a long way to go," or "the gay community hasn't done enough outreach to the black community" is that it creates a false dichotomy. it also seems to suggest that homosexuality is a racial trait. and it ignores the fact that the people who suffer the most from the homophobia in the black community: blacks who happen to be gay. remember, in uganda, legislation is eminent that will make homosexuality punishable by death. remember david kato, who was a leading advocate of gay rights in uganda. remember how he died: his skull caved in by a wrench in his own home. remember the rag "rolling stone" "outing" him, and the grotesque apology they gave after his death--they encouraged their fellow citizens NOT to murder people who happened to be gay, that the correct course of action is to jail, prosecute them, and then hang them lawfully(!!!!!!!!!!).

OF COURSE blacks are not intrinsically more homophobic than any other ethnicity. what you can demonstrate very clearly is that they are more homophobic to the exact degree that they are inculcated by religion. one of the unfortunate side effects of MLK's legacy is that african-americans intricately link their emancipation to religion, and are therefore unwilling to criticize or question it. one of the worst of these is that bayard rustin has been erased from the history books, along with a phillip randall, the men who organized the march on washington.

and now i see this stuff has claimed the life of another young man, who was driven insane because our society wants to cling to these beliefs that are UNTRUE.

one wonders what it's going to take.
