My daughter is on the costume crew for her school's production of Anne Frank and asked that I post this. If anyone could give suggestions on the makeup- it would be greatly appreciated! (she has some ideas but wanted to know what the experts on the board thought) Thanks in advance!

If this is for those in the Annex I would suggest very simple. pale with sunken eyes and maybe a little lip stain. Nothing over the top! Just make sure there are bags and shadows under the eyes!

Your daughter sounds so sweet! Tell her good luck!!!

I agree about the dark circles under her eyes...from what I can remember from pictures Anne had some even before she went into hiding. However, I wouldn't do too much of that because that can age an actor and I assume that everyone is in H.S., so you want to save most of that for the adult characters.

However, wasn't Anne when into keeping up her appearance and looking her best, despite being locked away? I think that she would want to look nice (especially for Peter) and I also think that Miep would bring her makeup...this might be in the script too.
I would think that she and Margot would have their hair parted and pinned back.

I would make Mrs. Frank look more plain...especially compared to Mrs. Van Daan who (I believe) came from more money than the Franks and was very much into her appearance as evident from her clothes and fur coats. Mrs. Van Daan would probably be very heavily made up too.

Thanks you two! You have described what my daughter was talking to me about last night! She's only 14 but glad to see she's on the same plane with you! My son is playing Mr. VanDaan in the production. Right now, the only thing I am disagreeing with is the director wants Anne Frank to wear 2 french braids with her hair parted in the middle. Seems like most pictures I have seen have her hair down and parted on the side. The girl playing Anne has long, very thick wavy hair. I think she should cut it at about her shoulder and flat iron it straight. Of course, that's just my opinion. And Maisie- thanks- my daughter is terrific! (so is my son!)

If the girl can act, I think the hair is not an issue. Actually, if she CAN'T act, the hair is the least of your worries. Will your son be smoking?

Personally, I would rather see The Diary of Ann-Margret. Talk about HAIR.

PEACE.

Suleen- I can always count on you to look at it from another angle! The girl can act so hopefully the hair won't be an issue. My son didn't mention anything about smoking but I doubt it will be part of the show. The director has edited some and I'm sure that will be. The Diary of Ann Margret- wow! That was totally in left field but I like the way you think!

Try to do a continum. Start w sl. pale and increase and add more sunken eyes a liitle stubble( less razors and soap as time progresses") to help show the passage of time and the increasingly stringent circumstances.

A good "inspiration" for Mrs. Van Daan would be Mrs. Gloup from the new "Charlie and the Chocalate Factory" Movie (though the original would is nice too!)

True, it really boarders on being campy, but I think it would work for an "inspiration" of sorts. The woman wore a lot of rouge and I see that happening with this character.

The director has edited some

Um, then he can fined! Maybe even lose his job! Don't you know there are posters on this board who LIVE for that kind of stuff?

"My son didn't mention anything about smoking but I doubt it will be part of the show."

When the show was done at my highschool, one of the actors lit the menora with a ciggerette. The director got pissed.

JUst felt like saying that.

Changes can be done IF permission is obtained. IN WRITING.

I could be wrong, but I believe her father created a foundation to look after that sort of thing.I know there was a 2nd version of the diary published w additional material edited out of the 1st( more familiar) version.

I doubt that they would care about the change to Mr. Van Daan not smoking during the play...I could be wrong though.

Also if it's not in the dialouge, just included in the stage directions, then it's not necessarily part of the script, but rather something that was part of the original production.

I asked my son about the smoking and he said they would probably use a stage cigarette and doesn't think it would be lit. (it's really not that big of deal in the scheme of things) They are also using the adapted play- the one used for the Natalie Portman production. Anne Frank wrote the diary- not the play-so I guess they can use dramatic license.

Isn't the smoking a big part of the VanDann's story line? Don't they argue about it quite a bit? And the fact that he cannot get cigarettes stresses him out even more.

PEACE.

I see what you're saying Sueleen- I meant to say that the cigarette deal was no big deal in my son's eyes. He has never smoked but if the part called for it on stage- he would deal with it- with a fake cigarette. There is a scene that deals with his smoking and I think the director has dealt with it. I guess I'll know in a couple of weeks when the show opens.

We didn't actually smoke on stage in High School, but it was referred to.

Maybe they should change it so that he can't get on his Facebook page, which causes stress and unneeded sobbings.
