The best vocal jazz group of the past 30 years.

I've been a huge fan since high school. They're best work was early on, but they're still together and going strong.
Recommended albums:
Anthology: Down In Birdland (for a great overview)
The Manhattan Transfer
Extensions
Mecca For Moderns
Vocalese
Brasil
Swing
Their biggest pop hit was the remake of "Boy From New York City" in the '80s (from Mecca For Moderns).
They have a very eclectic sound, and perform everything from 1930s and '40s big band jazz, to doo-wop, to pop ballads, to dance songs. Check 'em out sometime!

Love the song "Soul Food To Go" from their album "Brasil."
Didn't care for the claymation music video so much, but hey...

So was the Rum Tum Tugger video from CATS.
And Pie Jesu by Andrew Lloyd Webber (with Sarah Brightman and Paul Miles Kingston).
That's when they used to play more than one flavor of music.
Now it's just the same "song." Over and over again.
MTV sucks.

I used to worship the Manhattan Transfer. Love them. Still love them. Saw them in concert about 6 years ago. They obviously weren't as amazing as they used to be, but it was still a fabulous show and they sounded very good.
However, I am still a much bigger The Real Group shipper. I just wish they'd come back to the US and do some appearances!

I've seen the Manhattan Transfer five times in concert. The first, back in 1981, when Mecca For Moderns was released. They were incredible back then. We had a strange turn of events at that concert that led to us getting backstage passes from their manager to hang with the Transfer after the show. Really terrific PEOPLE as well as performers! We told them they should come to our town (Lawrence, Kansas) and do a concert, because they had a big college fan base there.
About six months later, we got a call from their manager letting us know they had booked a show at Kansas University... and they were giving us the entire front row... and it was on my birthday! (I kid you not.)
Best birthday present I ever had, or will likely ever receive!
But the tragic part? I had already been cast in the university's production of "Brigadoon" that season, and we had a performance the very same night. I ended up missing almost all of the concert, but raced over there in time for their last two numbers and their three encores... plus went backstage and out to eat with them afterwards.
...I barely had time to take off my kilt.

Their "Vocalese" concert was amazing. I saw it live and have it on VHS.
According to Amazon, it was released on DVD in 1991 and is currently out of print.
