It is quite a conundrum.

I don't think it is much of a conundrum. I feel like she might be playing a gambit. The only reason anybody can think of for his staying in the closet is that Scientology uses his gaiety to keep him in line. Perhaps the organization has convinced him that his entire life will be destroyed if he is honest about his sexuality. So what I think Margaret might be doing is saying, "The world is different now. Your being gay is not anything that anybody can use against you." And the fact that his sublimation has lead to charges of sexual misconduct from massage therapists the world over could be what Cho is talking about when she calls the situation sad.

I think we should also consider the lengths to which someone like Travolta or Cruise have gone to hide their secret. They've both gone ferociously against those (who don't have the social power of a Margaret Cho or a Carrie Fisher) who have dared speak about their sexual identity. I see the words of Fisher and Cho as a way to protect those people who have been, whether justly or not who knows, ruined by speaking out about their experiences with those two stars.
