Marijuana: Should it be legalized or not?

Barney Frank is supposedly introduced a bill, but it will go nowhere for a while.
It the feds would leave the states alone on this issue, that would be good enough. But, the fact that the feds, which are supposed to respect the rights of the states, are going after medical marijuana operations in California, is disgusting.
Further evidence that Bush's claim to be a true Republican is full of crap. He wants small government for things like helping the poor and supporting institutions he does not agree with, but when the states adopt laws he does not like, then big government is great. The DEA's actions against California Medical Marijuana operations are arguably unconstitutional, but when has that mattered to Bush.

Thank God is legal in my state cause
Jonny Boy, what state is that! I didn't know it was legal anywhere in the 50 states.

It is legal in California if you have an Rx.
It is relatively easy to get one. I have friends who have suffered from chronic pain, and use that instead of Vicodin or other Rx.

Posted: 8/18/08 at 12:38pmIn Cali... its legal if you get a medical perscription....at least on the state level. Federally it is still illegal....

Posted: 8/18/08 at 12:39pmI absolutely think it should be legalized, taxed, and regulated, as said by the more intelligent YWIW above me.

Posted: 8/18/08 at 12:42pmoh, ywiw, i am the exact opposite. gimme oxycodone or demoral or fentanyl or even hydrocodone or codeine over pot anyday.

Personally, I have only tried hydrocodone or codeine, but I have friends who cannot stomach them, and prefer pot. They also bake with it.
I don't smoke, so I have never been a big fan of pot. But I know plenty of folks who swear by its effectiveness over Rx.

"pippin, you've either neve smoked enough to get there or you're not smoking the right stuff. plus, to balance that, ya don't get noided out to the point of lunacy by drinking."
oh, I've smoked enough, Papa, I just dont' smoke myself into oblivion if I know I am going to have to be functional. the most important thing for people doing recreational drugs is to know your own limits, and don't be stupid. I don't have an addictive personality, so that is not really a problem for me. Now if it is late at night, and I want to put on "A New Hope" or "The Big Lebowski", I will do a Hell of a lot, and it's a good thing I've seen the film before, because my mind wanders so much that I have no idea what's going on. But, I am in the comfort of my house, sitting down for 2 1/2 hours and enjoying myself, so I see no problem with it in that case.
and I will have to agree with you on the paranoia factor to balance out the argument. It sucks big time. that's why driving shouldn't be done under the influence, becuase you never know when an "attack" is going to happen. So you get paranoid waiting for the paranoia. What a vicious cycle.

well, the know your limits thing holds true for anything and i think that it's been proven that there will always be some who abuse anything. as far as don't be stupid? seriously? this is america. have you never seen cops?
i offer as a humorous commentary on the addictiveness of marijuana, the supersuckers:

ywiw, i can't speak to anyone else but as far as a pain reliever (and i've broken a lot of things and have near daily pain) i'll take better living through chemistry over weed anyday.

Well, that just goes to show different things work differently on different people.
And, OT, sorry you are in lots of pain.

Posted: 8/18/08 at 1:09pmeh, thanks, but it's my own fault. eons ago i decided to see how many different types of ilicit substances i could get in my body at a pink floyd concert. it was pretty much all of them and before the night was over i had a compression fractures to l4 and l5 after a 25' leap of faith that landed me in front of a police cruiser and two befuddled cops curiously - and fortunately - enough. add that to the knees i blew out doing breaststroke for 13 years and i'm noisier than a bowl of rice crsipies and beer in the morning.

The discussion of making prostitution legal reminded me of a George Carlin quote.
He was talking about how he didn't understand why prostitution was against the law.
"Selling is legal, F---ing is legal. Why isn't selling F---- legal? We live in a country where you get a metal for dropping napalm people but we act like giving a guy an orgasm is the worst thing in the world."

If people know there isn't a law against it, they will do it. With a law against it in place, people will be less likely to drive while high.
There IS a law against it.

I've never taken a drug in my life. I don't even like to take aspirin! I think it's because when I was like 8, I saw Mrs. Nancy Reagan on my favorite show called Diff'rent Strokes and she said words that I have lived by to this very day: "Just say 'no,' Arnold."
I get high just by listening to my original London soundtrack of Starlight Express.

Namo; At least your lucky.. you are able to achieve euphoria. Think of those who can't. Those poor bitter people that not even herbs or chemicals can help. I feel for them.
Rejoice that Andrew L. Webber has touched you.

I had to debate this topic in 7th grade. I researched and prepared and built a sound argument against legalization (just as I was assigned by my teacher).
After the other side presented its position, I was convinced it should be legal. And I had never smoked pot. (Nor would I...not for several years, I mean.)
