Yes, he even took them during the 1998 season when he broke the home run record.

I paid a broker top dollar in 1998 for four seats to see the cheaters Sosa and McGwire play at Wrigley. Now, neither will get to the Hall of Fame and both have cork sized weenies!

I do think that McGuire will go to the hall of fame only because he did break the home run record. However, I do think that there will be a big fat asterisk next to his name.
It's outrageous that Pete Rose was banned from baseball for life while McGwire, Giambi, Rodriguez, Pettitte, etc might still wind up in the Hall of Fame. They cheated and they lied. Ban them and remove all of their records from the books.

This has been my party line for years. Rose may not be the nicest guy in the world and yes he did bet on baseball. But there are drug users, wife beaters, alcoholics, and murderers in the Hall of Fame. Yet they won't even consider letting Rose in? Shameful. Now he's left to making guest appearances on Veronica's Closet and WWE

Mark McGwire is a vile, heinous man. He should be kept out of the Hall of Fame for that bad eye job alone.

I did not catch the bad eye job! It is outrageous that the Cardinals have hired him as a pitching coach. And, naming a highway after a baseball player that had obviously cheated? That is just silly!
I think that the reason why they are letting Big Mack in and not rose is that when Rose was playing, there was and still is a strict rule about not betting on Baseball.
Mark Mcguire on the other hand, broke the record at a time when there was no clear rule against steroids. Yes, he did them but there was some stuff that he took that wasn't against the rules at the time.
So yes, McGuire will get into the hall of fame. Maybe not on the first ballot, but he will and there will be a big fat asterisk next to his name when it is in there.
Taking a performance enhancing drug is cheating. There are rules against cheating, even if they don't spell out every possible drug you can take.
As for the asterisk thing, I think that shames Roger Maris even more. He didn't cheat, but his record had an asterisk next to it because no one could bear the thought of Babe Ruth's record falling.
You're right taking a performance enhancing drug is cheating. However you have to realize two things, one is that MLB has a list of things you can't take. Furthermore, the stuff that McGwire was taking was not only not banned by MLB but it was at at time where if a player did get caught, there wasn't much that they could do about it.
However, things have changed. You can't punish someone for breaking what is now a very strict and black and white rule, when it wasn't around during their time.
brdlwyr, the bad eye job was very obvious when he was a blubbering hot mess on television.

I will watch it more carefully. I am a sucker for bad face work!
McGwire knew he was cheating and that is why he hid if for over a decade. It will be a mockery if he gets into the Hall of Fame and I do not understand why MLB and the Cardinals are letting him coach. What is he going to teach - Cork Batting 101? Roids 201?
There's no use splitting hairs. Cheating is cheating and what McGwire and other players like him did is way worse than what Pete Rose did.
What about football? Why don't they investigate steroid use in football?
Does anyone honestly believe football players can get that big without steroids?
The NFL has had a drug policy for quite a while but it has a lot of follies and can be easily manipulated. The NFL cooperated with Congress, unlike MLB, so they were patted on the head essentially and left. Baseball on the other hand had very weak drug policies in just the minor leagues.
Eris, in the case of Pete Rose he could have just admitted to gambling on games and that would have been the end of it. The punishment for just admitting it allegedly would have not have been to the extreme of banishment. Even so, reinstatement was discussed but Rose accepted his punishment and lied until he got a book deal to pay off his debts.
McGwire has barely gotten over 25% of a vote for an induction that needs 75% of the writers. He has no shot. The BBWAA are completely self-absorbed, especially in this issue. They like many in baseball at the time made money on the Summer of '98, getting book deals and such. When there was andro found in McGwire's locker they did not care about it until years later. He could have a shot if he is considered by his peers in the Veterans Committee but that could be decades from now.

I saw those numbers for McGwire last week and I also concluded that there was NO way that he will be elected by the writers.
And, yes PJ, the NFL has tested for years and does suspend and even ban players for numerous positive tests.
The Bears weak play is proof that there is not a lot of steroid use!
Eris, you said it best, cheating is cheating. Pete Rose cheated because the rules clearly said that you don't bet on baseball and he did. McGwire did due to the fact that he took performance enhancers. Cheating is cheating no matter what. Furthermore you can't justify one over the other as better or worse.
It's like a cop telling you you broke the law only you point out that someone else also broke the law but did something worse then you. It doesn't and shouldn't matter, breaking the law is breaking the law. Just like cheating is cheating.
As for the NFL, I remember reading some interviews from ESPN and watching it and listening to ESPN radio. Various players from around the NFL were talking around the time of the MLB congressional hearings about how there is really no need for performance enhancers in football. First off, no one really looks shocked or confused when they see very buff football player. This is due to the fact that their practices consist of weight training. Furthermore, they were talking about how a lot of MLB players were using steroids etc to break individual records. Most hits, most homers etc. Things that one wouldn't need steroids for in the NFL. The players are naturally big and one could get the records for most sacks etc on their own merits rather then cheat.
