I have a callback for Mary tommorow.
My knowledge of the show is quite limited, I know the songs but not all of the stuff behind them (context, character motivation, etc).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Mary is confused about her feelings towards Jesus.
He is unlike any other man she has ever met. She feels like she is not worthy of having his respect and love. She also does not know what kind of love she is experiencing. She feels a love like the other desciples do, but than she also has a strong attraction to Jesus.
Hope that helps.

Since I arrived at university (a year and a half ago), I have played
Lulu in Cabaret- a slut.
Doris Lavine in God- a slut.
Lois/ Bianca in Kiss Me Kate- a slut.
what are they trying to tell me?
"I Don't Know How To Love Him" pretty well embodies Mary overall. Most of her songs are pretty straight forward. When I played Peter in the show Mary and I did a lot together during the trials and what not to keep us from blending into the ensemble.

Judy/Karen - maybe if you weren't so freakin' hot looking, you wouldn't be cast inthe slut roles!
Karen?
Ah Sweetie....you are my favorite Slut Hussy of all time !!! Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Rath, this Judy in Disguise is really a Karen in hiding....hehe.
Thanks for the nice words guys! (And yes, I do consider "slut" and "bitch" and definitely "hussy" to be nice words coming from this crowd! hehe).
Thanks, Karen. I thought he was talking about the Karen in his icon, and I've yet to see her in any slut roles, so I was rather confused!

It's all good.....I'm hoping to add another slut role to the list but the rehearsal schedules for JCS and the opera I'm in (and desperately want to get out of) overlap. We'll see.
At any rate, I'm also a slut in the opera. A chorus slut, but a slut nonetheless.

In what? how have i never heard of this slut role?
I played Mary in a road company and it was a great experience. I'm not sure what 'context' you want unless you've never heard any bible stories and don't know anything about Jesus and the disciples, etc.
Basically, Mary is someone who has had everyone else and the one guy she wants is someone she can never have. She knows he is something 'special' and that she really isn't on the radar but she loves him on a number of levels and probably because she's never had the experience of loving someone without the physical interaction, she isn't really sure what to do.
If you are singing 'I Don't Know how to Love Him' it plays best if you build the song. So you start out wistful and thoughtful and then build up to a more gut wrenching emotion of angst and longing.
Hope that helps.
How ironic that this comes up the day I'm going to see LITTLE WOMEN! And how many of you are old enough to get that reference?

yes! thank you SamIAm!
Rath....I'm definitely not old enough....
When I was wee, Maureen McGovern had a HUGE pop hit with "I Don't Know How To Love Him."
Crap. You're right. I knew it didn't make sense, since it wasn't from a disaster movie. Erase all that. Wouldn't want to be teaching bad history.
I just corrected trivia about Helen Reddy.
Is this what my life has become?
Apparently so. But I appreciate it! Imagine the embarrassment if I had shouted that during the encores. There ARE encores, right? I mean, she WILL sing Can You Read My Mind, right? And you know she has to sing The Morning After. I mean, she HAS to.
