this show must be giving Joe some much needed space to vent his anger. Did anyone see how he treated the girl who was starting to cry and said she'd like to stay on the show? he quipped "We're not here to make you happy. We're here to find a new Master Chef." and then he more than tossed her plate in the garbage. His shoulder must hurt today from that toss.

I don't even think it's anger. He's such a drama queen, he has to turn everything into a huge show for the cameras and producers. He's so much more annoying than the other two.

Yes, but none include the element of competition.

Eh...Iron Chef, Chopped and even Food Network Star are pretty tame and feel-goody.

I finally caught up on this show. I like Luca - he was honest on why he targeted Jordan, and then gave him props for coming through. I kind of liked Jordan, until he saved himself - I understand it is a competition, but so early on, saving yourself when you are supposedly one of the best, I dunno. It was kind of a punk move, but in his shoes, with that much at risk, who knows what I would do.

Natasha is clearly getting the bitch edit, but it seems to be earned. She clearly thinks she is "better than" Krissy, and I having feeling that in school, she would have been one of the plastics, and Krissy the girl they torment. I kind of like Krissy, though I can imagine that if her style sets you back on your heels, it could be grating. She just seems like someone who has had to fight for everything...

I think the former Pro Athlete (Eddie) has not had much air time, as well as the Asian guy. Howard seems to be up and down. I liked him in the initial comp, but have not been that pleased with him during the actual show.

I think the shy girl with glasses (Bri) may be something special. I like her. As I do Jessie. I think she may be a heck of a surprise. Bime also seems interesting.

Why does Joe keep asking if the chefs are authentic? It all reads as a bully crap coming from him. If the food is good, isn't that what really matters?

Yup, but they're all cable shows (and on the same cable network at that). Since I wrote that, only one other network show has appeared; The American Baking Competition on CBS. It's a British import (BBC2's The Great British Bakeoff), including the tents and Paul Hollywood.

That show is certainly "friendlier" than MasterChef, but I don't know that it will end up being a recurring series like it is in the UK. The US version of MasterChef seems deliberately designed to feature unnecessary rudeness. These contestants are painted as "home chefs" - not professionals like in Hell's Kitchen, or Republican capitalists like on The Apprentice.

OOOPS! Did I say, "Republican" out loud? Master Chef

Gordon asked one of the contestants that question this week, too. I don't get it, either. It reminds me of how marine sergeants in the movies address plebes.

So if it isn't "authentic", what is it, fake?

I think that they want the Chefs to cook from the heart, from what they know - but with home cooks, isn't part of the issue discovering that?

Again, if it tastes good, why do they question the motivation for why it does?

Did anyone else feel like this week was less MasterChef and more Hell's Kitchen?

Absolutely. I was thinking about that when I was watching it. It was like Joe and Gordon forgot what show they were on.

Not to derail, but there is a contestant on CBS' The American Baking Competition that is pretty much a 'real-life' Mrs. Lovette (including the coif). She's a fairly poor baker, and she cries a lot. Mostly, I wanted to share this picture because it reminds me so much of Sweeney Todd:

I'm watching that show as well, and thought the same thing about her.

I was just waiting for her to start singing.

It was nice to finally see more of Lynn this week! Tough break for him in the pasta challenge.

Speaking of which, did anyone else notice that when Lidia insisted on saucing the pasta on camera, her sauce was very blonde (like melted butter), but in the next shot where they showed the completed dish, the sauce was much darker (like a brown butter, or maybe had a little bit of tomato included)?

Krissi is really turning out to be a good cook, but a rotten human being. Did I miss why she was so vindictive towards Bime?

I noticed that with LIdia's sauce too, but I guessed it was the lighting.

It happened on the first episode when it was the top 18-20 and Krissi just started saying how she didn't like certain people So since we have almost no character development it came out of left field. I want Jessie to win, thats all.
