I honestly thought he was already out. I swear I recall an interview he and his best college bud/classmate Joe Mangiello (of Tru Blood) did with Empire when they were co-starring on each other's shows (I think they are also both in the Channing Tatum stripper movie).
I thought Joe made some reference to Matt's husband.
But I could be wrong.
Either way good for him.

He was out, then sort of went back in, now out again. He's in and out of the closet more often than Liza's Halston collection.

I thought that it was understood that he was living with his publicist and they were a couple and had kids, but that he was always cagey about talking about it. With the Normal Heart going into production, I'm guessing he's going to be more open about talking about it.
At any rate, I've crushed on him since he played Bryce Larkin on Chuck.

He was acvtually pretty great in his last storyline on Guiding Light as a character whose childhood molestation (by a woman for the record) caused him to become a serial killer until he came to and killed himself. It wasn't a well written storyline--even as far as soap shocker stories go (and even less so for fans of the show for a long time who knerw that it didn't make any sense with the character)--but he made it riveiting to watch.
As others said, I got the impression he more or less was out (even back in his soap days) but never really talked about it, and then for whatever reason when he got his USA TV show went a bit more in--I assumed due to his publicist and pressure--he never said he was straight or made up girlfriends, but he did always officially deny to talk about it, which is his prerogative--till now.
Still it was never quite the ridiculous situation that Luke Evans ius experiencing now that he and his team seem set to try to make him a big Hollywood name--when you *officially* come out (which technically Matt thanking his family by name but not even refering to his relationship or sexuality hasn't done) and proudly brag for years about your homosexuality and now go on about girlfriends and acxt like those past interviews don't exist even when they're everywhere online... it's at the least kinda embarassing.
