Posted: 10/21/04 at 5:08pmWow so I just saw Maya Angelou speak at my university today. She was hilarious and really good and thought provoking. She started off with signing verses of songs in different languages. Her message of her speech was all about us being composers of our lives and others and to make the most of it. I really enjoyed it and all of her poetry and life stories she included. Has anyone else seen her speak before? I love her books too!

Yes, Rose. I saw her speak when I lived in DC. Mesmeric, relaxing presence. Very smooth speaking voice and her poetry is poignant without being contentious about a very contraversial subject. Love her.

She could read a phone book and make it the most interesting and meaningful piece of literature that you've ever heard. I've never had the pleasure of personally hearing her speak, but everyone who has says she is absolutely AMAZING. I'm glad you got that opportunity

You may write me down in history
With your bitter twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
gotta love her.

Posted: 10/21/04 at 6:02pmShe's a blast to go drinking with, by the way. In another lifetime, I managed a bookstore and she came in for a signing. After that was over, she invited me and a couple of co-workers out for drinks -- she kicked off her shoes (literally), knocked back several scotches and told some hilarious (off-color) anecdotes and was totally the life of the party. Nothing like that ultra-serious, earth mother image that's generally her public persona -- she's just regular folks.
