It's like watching a car wreck, except when it's over you can press "play" and watch it all over again.
And it gets better each time.

It was an embarrassment. It looked like dad had to be there with his little girl after she made a boo boo.
God help this country.

What really scares me is how low the bar has been dropped for her limbo to proceed.
Thursday night, all she has to do is walk and talk without blowing a spit bubble or announce the wrong leader of the wrong country, and she will be hailed as a master politician --"See! She's smart, you just have to leave her alone!"
Make no mistake -- the string of recent disasters will only help her, because she literally has no where to go but up. People will be rooting for her comeback -- that's the "narrative" here.
And the country will desperately seek a new distraction this week. Reality has bitten, and left its dentures in our collective ass.
Whereas Biden now has a very high bar -- the senior statesman must prove he's lightyears more savvy than she. If he rambles or makes a single error, factual, tactical or perceived to be sextist (one patronizing "dear" and he's dead) he will be denounced as a geriatric, woman-hating rambler.

Posted: 9/30/08 at 9:31amAuggie - bottom line is that WE set the bar, not pundits or politicians. I do not think independents or undecided voters have low expectations, and that's what this is about.

Posted: 9/30/08 at 9:34amWould that give her an unfair advantage over Biden?

I'd like to think all those RNC-sanctioned "Hottest VP from the Coolest State" buttons would make charges of sexism moot, but I'm not holding my breath.

I hope you're right,Madbrain. It's very noteworthy that leading Republicans like David Frum, George Will, and even never-trash-fellow-Republicans Mike Murphy have denounced her performance, Frum going so far as to say "Dan Quayle ever in his life has performed as badly as Sarah Palin in the last month."
What pisses me off is the last thing in the Times article today -- how she's "...frequently up until the small hours of the morning in herhotel room trying to cram as much info as possible before the debate..."
Wait just a minute.
This is the Vice Presidency of the United State -- possibly the Presidencey -- not a pass-fail exam in a subject other than your major. So instead of measuring the acquired wisdom and thoughtful responses of someone with years of careful, incremental study, we will be forced to give thumbs up/thumbs down to how well she processed her "cramming."
So it's the quality of all nighter that counts? Not ultimately the quality of the candidate?
And we wonder why the electorate is cynical.

Having been unfortunately surprised by what the public will swallow on the right, I agree with Auggie...I'm scared that this will be spun and turned into a positive for Palin. Fortunately, I think McCain is looking worse and the fact that he really needed to win that first debate and didnt will hopefully sway the undecided once and for all.
...but I've learned not to be too optimistic.

When she initially starts talking, McCain looks like he is dying to shut her up.
And yes, five weeks is a lifetime in politics but....wow, I really haven't seen a trainwreck like this in some time.

I knew that wouldnt get past the sensors.
I really love the term "gotcha journalism" as much as "fuzzy math"...which is NOT AT ALL!

I am mesmerized by the way Sarah and Gimpy spend the whole time whining about the treatment (with G looking alternately embarrassed and enraged) of Palin and then when Couric asks Palin what she has learned Palin says, "That it IS all about gotcha journalism... but that's okay."
Which is it guysss and galsss? Horrible/unfair or okay?
I get the feeling Sarah's nastiest crony politics Yahoo email accounts ended with lines like:
Fire that sunuvabitch.

Her answers become even more painful when you read the transcripts.
"We have trade missions back and forth. We-- we do-- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where-- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is-- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to-- to our state."
It is from Alaska that we send those out? Send what out?
