I found this Salon profile completely enthralling. There are some really interesting revelations, at least they were new to me.
Maggie's first son, born without benefit of his one-woman mother and one-man father being united in the sacred bonds of Holy Matrimony, is a 31 year old "aspiring musical theater librettist" who refused to comment for the article.
It seems as if the most strident people in contemporary American culture are just completely pissed off about not getting their idealized dream of romantic love and spend their time getting public payback (cf Larry Kramer).
The making of gay marriage's top foe
Faaaaaaaascinating.
I'm not going to finish the whole article before I leave work, but two things strike me.
First, what IS it about people that make them want to punish the rest of us for their own bad judgment.
And secondly, how does someone (her oldest son) deal with the fact that the organizing principle around their mother's existence is the fact that their birth is the mistake that has set in motion a series of events that has caused a great deal of harm for a great number of people. How F*CKED does that make one in the head???

I don't buy the article's suggestion that Gallagher is just intensely dedicated to "defending" "traditional" "marriage" and not a raging homophobe. One can be kind and personable and still ultimately be a dick. Gallagher is AGAINST any legal union between same-sex persons. It's not just about "marriage."
